I like Scouts, and if its not booty fablissios that Scout listed would probably be a good buy-it and wheel-it option. (course the first two adds have been deleeted)
But they are heavy pigs. Not really all that far off a built toy or Jeep (I've seen quite a few CJ's that weigh as much as my Scout after the owner piles it up will all sorts of crap), but allot of weight in front. Drive-trains are good however if you take care of them.
That said, I like what I have seen folks do with XJ's and they seem like a nice cross between good wheeler and enclosed comfort. But with the unibody, everyone also says they pretty much tear themselves apart after a few good wheeling seasons unless you beef the crap out of them.
I like Toy's too. Very impressive, good aftermarket support, and lots you can do with one. Little harder with a 4-runner than a PU but many folks have done it.
Hard to beat the body dimensions, durability and over-all size of the Jeep CJ/YJ/TJ tub. Especially with the trees and such in the normal PNW wheeling areas. But then you have a Jeep just like everyone else
Takes more skill to wheel a large/full bodied rig
Whatever you get, don't plan on it being a DD and hard-core wheeler. That's just more stress and headache than one needs, especially with a family. Also figure out how much your wife/kids are REALLY going to wheel with you... and what kind of wheeling there going to come on (hard core or camping type runs), then either build for that or get two rigs (nicer, family-wheeler/DD and then a dedicated weekend-warrior (probably 2-seater) for the beat-your-**** runs).
