Ok so ive noticed when the 1st time for the day the tahoe is cranked that it has a slight knock but once it runs for a min the knock goes away. Dont do this every morning. Its an 2010 5.3 with 36k on it. Anyone have any idea of what it may be?

My 2008 Z71 with 5.3 did same thing I asked dealership about it and they said "oh they all do that nothing wrong with it" :****:

He's right, it's piston slap, ALL LS motors do it to some extent on cold start up. Believe it or not, you can tear down an ls motor that has done it for 300,000 miles and the pistons and cylinder walls will looks better than a 40k mile 350 or ford 5.0. People will tell you a Ac Delco PF61 or a wix filter will stop it... Don't believe the hype. It's just something they do to drive you crazy :****:

Thanks guys. I almost pmed you muddin. But decided to post it up. Yall all helped my feelings alot. So i should keep rockin til it stops knockin? :driving:

It's probably never going to stop. It's just something they do. I had a Z71 that I had to put an oil pump in that did it worse than most I have seen/owned. Also, make sure your running 5w30 in it. They raise HELL if you put anything else in them.

x2 on the 5w30 especially in the winter, and yes, drive it til the wheels fall off :driving:

Mine sits for 10 days at a time and has a little knock when I crank it for the first time when I get home. 250,000 on the odometer and I would trust it to go anywhere.

165,000 on my 01 Tahoe. It's been doing it since I've owned it at 60k. Only when I crank it cold.......I beat the hell out of mine and still running strong booyang

You sure it's piston slap? I really think its the hydraulic roller lifters bleeding down mines done it since it was new.

What's worse than this noise is the clang when you put them in gear, I thought the transfer case was messed up when I test drove my truck 10 years ago.

Ive had 8 01 and newer vehicles with the 5,3 one was a 6.0 and its the only one i ever noticed it on.

My wife's Tahoe does same thing. Very similar to 4.0l in my 97 TJ. Gotta love piston slap in the morning! :dblthumb:
