I hope I can explain this ok. You know the control box that is attached to the top of the winch to control it. I don't have a lot of room in the front of my rig so I pulled the plastic off and there is this tiny ( 2x3x3) cube in there. Tiny compared to all the plastic around it. My question is I have a easy spot for this but is it water resistant. Enough on its own or does it really need that plastic case?

Should be fine.

The plastic box is for looks and to cover the electrical connections more than weather protection

I relocated the one on my buggy to behind the grill and never had a problem with weather proofing. I'd say do it.

i relocated my rear winch control to the side of my rig..let me look for a pic, both of my winches are controlled from inside:

best pic I could find..its right in front of the rear drivers bump can:

That's a good pic. By your electrinics are still in the box. I would like mine to be out of it for size. Maybe I could coat the connectors in silicone to keep corrosion out

Plasti dip the wiring/connectors

I'm guessing you have one of the newer winches with the solid state control...not the older style with solenoids. I don't see any reason that moving it outside of the protective cover would be a problem. Just like others have said...plasti dip or something like that to keep corrosion down and you should be good to go.
