Ive got a like new 8000 warn winch...but things like the cables that push pull the control of this thing are a bit worn out. My question... is this a good enough winch that I should repair the things that need fixing or should I get something differnt. Again the winch itself is in really sound shape just not the control ****.:booo:

They are absolute junk. You'll want to get rid of it ASAP. Usually you have to pay someone to take it, but if you PM me your address I'll come over and take it off your hands for free.

those are a great pulling winch...the predecessor to the 8274. The controls are kinda a pain in the butt and I don't think you can get new ones and no power out can get ya if you get a bind in the cable. If you can make what you have work then it should be a great winch for you.

Skagit Tranny is just around the corner from where I live I guess I'll stop by there and ask a few. As far as it being able to wind out that is a down fall of that. I was wondering if I could just change out the control mec and make it like the 8274. The gear box seems the same?

Sell it and get a later modle, cause last time I checked you can not get parts for that one any longer

Get 2 continious duty soleniods (wire them in series) and built your own power in controller. You can rig up a brake cable and a clutch cable. I ran for years with one like that. Just remember to always set the brake as you power off. Otherwise you may let go of what you were tugging. Fantastic wincks for the $$$$!

X2

Also, somewhere I read a write-up somebody did on converting their 5687 to power in & out. Off to find it...

<edit> More thoughts:
The mounting bolt pattern is funky, so custom work is required.

More info and parts source. Came from a Yahoo search

Warn discontinued their parts supply for these old winches in 1992, so your only source is the comapny they sold those rights to....The 4-Wheel Drive Center of Minnesota, phone number 800-328-4445 (ask for John), email [email protected]. They carry rebuilt motors, and many of the miscellaneous parts. Bearings are likely best sourced thru a local bearing supply house, and rebuilt motors are in the ~$200 range, so you may be better off taking yours to a local electrical shop. However, if you really need the stuff, they carry it.

Also if you keep this winch and want a spare for parts. I have one I'll sell. Good working shape with cable, soleniod and hand controller. $150
