Died yesterday at 63. Reading the thread on PBB and you'd think he was the devil. Is his rep that bad? I know his show made him out to be a **** and I have read about poor business practices and bankruptcy.

Just figured you are in the know more than anyone else I know.

Boyd has been in bad health since Jan sometime. I saw yesterday morning on Jalopy Journal he died.

My take. Boyd was an assclown. His show was a mockery, he made a mockery of the Land Speed organization at Bonneville last year. And with total disregard for the fragile environment of the salt proceeded to bury his RV and multiple other vehicles when they broke thorugh the thin salt in and area they weren't supposed to be. You ever watch American Hotrod and it was a joke.

All of that said Boyd, its a catch 22, even with all the bad perception, Boyd was a visionary and pioneer in the modern aftermarket world. If it weren't for his work we wouldn't have had the "Billet" movement, which pretty much kickstarted the current aftermarket of mailorder building. He deserves a lot of credit for bringing alot of cool cars to the public eye with his builds. Now I don't like 99% of what Boyd has built but the general public probably does.

I think my opinion of Boyd can be summed up in this phrase "Even bad press is still good press" and its true. Even the bad that I see, it was still good for the industry.

Hmm, I would have guessed that there wasn't any life on the salt flats.
Enviroment doesn't have to mean life, in this case if is erosion, and contamination of the salt layer.

Th Salt Flats aren't a solid pile of salt. They are actually clay with a thin layer of salt floated on top of it. Some places is thicker than others, and depending on where the water is or was that area could be thinner. Yes it is still a Lake, water is still out there, and depending on the winds depends on where that water is at.

Here is a decent account of what happened with pictures.

I don't know how he's made it this long without it but without a doubt he's gonna cross the right person one day!

Reminds me of the story about the kid coming home bragging to his Dad about spitting on his classmates...Dad said that's great and to keep right on doing it.....came home the next day beat to hell.......Dad said "You finally spit on the right one didn't you!" molaugh

This is the sort of thing that makes me nervous about big 2wd tow rigs. A normal 4x4 CTD wouldn't have had these problems.

(Ok, I know in this case they just went to the wrong place but if you replace "salt fla"t with "unusually soaked grassy field" the same thing could happen.)

dad did some drinking with boys a couple years ago. he was in ptown for a family reunion and dad graduated with one of his cousins and knows all the rest of them. they invited dad down since he has a couple muscle cars, and dad said he was real cool to hang around. the ol man figured it was all a show for publicity. although they were all boosin :drinkers:
the **** part of it was dad got the invite at like 9 in the mornin to stop by around 3 or 4 and the ****er called me when he left the shindig.
thanks dad :flipgotcha:
if i would have went, i would have told him he should have never fired bluebear

Really? He was the young fat kid with the bad attitude right? He left and he was still unhappy even though he was getting paid to build his own dream hotrod on tv. I promise you, if I was getting paid to build my personal XRRA buggy on tv I wouldn't be pissing and moaning about my job.

Or do I have him mixed up with somebody else?
