OK guys, I've started the install of the 4.56 gears. I found instructions online that showed the carrier shims outside of the bearing races. Between the bearing race and the housing. When I took my diff. apart the last person who set the gears up put the shims between the bearings and the carrier. The carrier bearing caps had been previously marked so I know this diff. has been apart at least once before since new. That doesn't necessarily mean that the last guy put it back together right. So, my question is this. Where do the carrier adjustment shims go inboard of the bearings or outboard of the bearings or does it matter as long as the carrier is snug and I have a good pattern on the gears? HELP!!!!!!!

Wht diff were the online instructions for? Ford 8.8 or the XJ 44 specifically? Ford rears put them outside of the bearings, most Dana's put them between the bearings and carrier..

XJ dana 44 shims go between the bearing and carrier---- unless you are installing a ARB.

Tom installed the gears in my XJ 44 so I would follow his advice. That's the end of my rig that hasn't broken 2 sets of R&P :awesomework:

A Dana 44 is alway's a dana 44, it's not xj specific, carrier cap's are marked like that from the factory.
