hey guys, couple questions... i have a 79 yota with a side shift tranny in it... i have blow 3 off these in the past 4 yrs or so... i was told to go 5 speed as they were stronger' my question is what is the correct tranny i need to replace my 4 speed with a 5 speed... one of the 5speed trannys has the shift to far forward.. does anyone know the numbers and specs on these? and will my doubler be a dirct bolt up to a 5 speed setup?

any help would be great:awesomework:

thanks guys

A 5speed and t-case from 81-83 should bolt right in. 84-95s are about 4" longer that the early one's.

I don't think so but the hole in the floor for the shifters may be a little different. Also 4 speeds from 81-83 are top shift and will fit also.

The early 5 speed trannys are not any stronger than the 4 speeds (believe it is an L40/L43?), the stronger tranny would be the W56, which will be longer. You could also consider rebuilding an early 5 speed (L45?) with the bigger input bearing, or having a marlin L45 built but that is expensive.

What are you breaking in the 4 speeds? I broke some gears in one but that is because they have a weak input bearing and the gears were not really in mesh with no remaining bearing on the shafts.

in one of them the first gear and reverse blew, i was told they are on the same slide? the next one hasnt fully blown but it howling and i drained the 90w and it was pure metal... so i figure a bearing, the 3rd one had a problem when i got it from a guy, he wasnt sure if it was good or not... so that one never made it out of the garage..lol,

so my next question is...
do i stick with the 4 speed and maybe blow that?

or

get a 5 speed and see what it does instead?:awesomework:
