I just had a thought... I could make some sweet tube rack with the supports in my basement / garage.

Can I weld to my house laughing1

Look at what I did in the barn. I have a lot of metal in 16" x 36" X barn length. Built the wall stands. Held as much weight as we can trrow at it.

I've never been in the barn paying attention .... in fact I've only been in the barn one time at the New Years party :drinkers:

I know I love said barn though drool

weight wasnt really my concern, **** them things are holding up a house they can probably handle a couple hundy lbs of DOM... laughing1

Sure, but once you get them loaded, you will have more than a couple hundy.

Normally I would not take blurry cell phone pics, but it's only for you P :flipoff1:

Materials used:

2-1/2" x 2-1/2" angle on walls
2" x 2" square tubing for runners
2" x 4" flat for rack ends.

They sit on the floor and lag to the walls.

Five shelves, bottom to top:

Flat stock
Angle
Square tubing
round weldered seam
round DOM

laughing1 I wouldnt be sitting on that much material. I tend to buy as I need it (easy for me to do from were I work) , per project and try to sit on a couple sticks outside of that. That is a sweet setup though !

I should have bought more. My steel has doubled, while my 401k is in half.

As an option, this is my lumber rack: http://just4fun.org/woodworking/workshop/lumber_rack

It's been up for about 7 years now and it's been fully loaded (far more than the pics) for most of that time. I sometimes get cheap or free scores so I load up. Whatever you do, be sure that each shelf is level and in plane. If it's wood it will warp if it's not. If it's metal then some of the supports won't be doing their job.

It's a project that's well worth the time.

John, steel prices right now would certainly be another reason why I wont have much... HREW has gone up about 20 bux a stick since last summer  .... that was enough to scare me away from pricing DOM right now. laughing1

John G you are so right. I'm sitting on 20 sticks of HREW, and its quadrupled since I bought it.

dont be telling me that ****!!! I am about to buy into some tubing!

weld on P!

If you havent bought in a while your going to hate it. I had a guy call me today about a cage in his YJ I know joke sighed in relief when he said he already had his 1.75x.120wall DOM so that wasnt a concern...

Anyone in the Bham priced DOM in that flavor lately ? Im sure glad I got my buggy tube bought and done, that would have hurt at what the current prices seem to be doing !

P, I built my tube holder by simply drilling some 3/4" holes into some studs at an angle. Then stuck some 3/4" steel round stock into the holes. It easily holes more than enough tube. Plus it cost about 0$ since the round stock was a freebe from a concrete form company.

i always have pulled a neg bat cable and turned the ignition key to off to weld on a vehicle, what would you turn off in a house. shop or barn???? :-\

wade

Yea, i think P's concern is can he Weld directly on the supports to his house..
any complications..
not if they'll hold the load or how to engineer it... :dunno:

i dont see any reason you couldnt weld to the supports in the house. It is not like they are part of the circuit like on a car.

I think you should be ok, my dads barn house is made of steel, and we have added on to it 3 times, and never messed anything up thumb.gif
