Help pick my future engine/tranny

So far we've got:

Chevy sb350/th350
Ford 5.0or351/C4or6

Is it worth looking at big blocks or would they just suck too much propane for no outstanding benefit? (remember budget so I won't be performance modding engine anytime soon)

And what engine/tranny will bolt up to my D300 without expensive AA adapters? I know Jon referenced 727s...

Don't be a dumbass. Get yerself a 258 and put your rig back together. Seriously, you going to wait for a year or two before it's back on the trails? WTF are you thinking? A used 258 won't set you back but a couple of bucks, and everything bolts right up.

Then you can save up for the whatever.

I have thought about doing that for the ease and immediate use next spring. But there is no question that I will be upgrading as soon as feasible...
 
I am voting for a 350 or 400 small block chevy $3-500 with a mid size cam and a th400 $150-200with a cheap np208 adapter and a 27spline input for the dana 300 $120. I bet you can buy all this set up for under a grand in good running condition. There are two different styles of adapters a tall and a short, get the short one a run a flat belly pan with a 1in body lift. It works very good and plenty of power with your gearing as it is now. I had a tbi 350 and th400 in my wrangler with stock d300 gearing and 5.13s and it worked great on rocks and trails. I ran 39.5 tsls. The nice thing about the th400 is it is only 2in longer than the th350 and it is damn near indestructable. The design of the factory adapters also clock your t-case up like it has a clocking ring. It is definitely the way I would and have gone on a budget.
 
If ya stuck with a 6 you will still have problems getting the 42's going. Go v8. If you do a C6 you DONT need a adaptor, all you have to do is cut 1 inch off the output. If ya go c4 there are 2 issues. They are fawking rare as heck now($$$) AND you have to buy a damn expensive adaptor.

I did a oddball atlas, ford input but pass drop cause thats where im used to my diff being.

Personally i think ya should fine a sbc400/th4004x4 trans and get to hooking it all up. They are plentifull in 3/4 ton trucks.
 
2000 to 2003 5.3l chev to a th400. the 5.3l has aluminum heads and is almost 300 horse stock and they came in every 1/2 ton truck and you can buy them for under a grand if you look around :D

Any reason to jump up to 454? Or are they just anchors?
