i have a 1989 body, computer and harness on my 4runner with a 1985 motor and frame. the motor does not run correctly as there are plugs "more then one from the harness that do not plug in anywhere and there is at least one sensor or valve that has no plug to plug in to it. this sensor or electronic valve....not quite sure what it is....has a hose that run's directly to the front of the throttle body right under the air fuel screw or what ever it is that you should never mess with. I'm sure it has been messed with and i was woundering if anyone know how far you should back out that screw from the bottoming out to try and reset it. my truck back fires but idels fine but as soon as i step on the throttle it seems to fall on it's face and if i put the thottle to the floor it will run but severly under powered. it is a good motor as just the other day i was doing 70 down the free way no problem to my buddy proporty but when i left i had it to the floor and could hardly do 40 mph. also i have had no luck finding a coolent temp sensor that will fit either of the 2 plugs from the harness that go no where...ggrrrrrrrr i have baught 4 differnt temp sensors and they all are 2 wire sensors. my temp gauge in the truck does not work either! what do i do guys can you help. do i have the wrong intake for this harness. is there a way anyone with a 1989 tell me what color there coolent temp sensor plug is? i have a white plug and a gray plug with no home and i'm sure thats half the battle. also does anyone have a vacume diagram for the 1989 4runner 22re?

Thanks for everything guys you are my only hope.

it was running good and now it doesn't?

If thats the case I'd check your timing chain.

It's intermitant somedays it runs great some days it does not....thats why i'm so baffeled.....it seems like it runs like **** untill i get off road somewhere then she runs like a champ. but on the other hand it almost seems to run better if i don't shut it off. like if i go wheelin i can't shut my truck off or kill it or it will run like **** for 20 min or so then smooth out. so that is not a timing chain ro it would always run like ****. i think it has alot to do with the coolent temp sensor. on toyota's i have been told if there is no coolent sensor it will read -40 and dump way to much fuel. and smells like it. i need to know if someone could be so kind to take a pic of there 1989 4runner coolent temp sensor plug so i know witch one to use.

Thanks!

I think there is a timer switch and a temp sensor on the intake manifold right by the thermostat.

When I did my 22r efi swap (89 harness intake/computer) I had a broken timer switch but I had a sensor from an older motor so I just cut the plug off and soldered on the new plug and stuck the older sensor in, it worked with no issues.

There are 2 vacume sensors on the top of the valve cover is that what you talking about? was your coolent temp sensor 2 wires and if so what colors where they if you can remember or go look? also right where the plactic intack duct meets the aluminum intake manifold there is a flat head screw like a air fuel mixture screw. what is that? do you know? and directly below it the is a 1/2 hose about 10 inches long that going to some sort of sensor or electronic valve and i have nothing pluged into that. what is that sensor for and it seems to be important. just baught this truck and trying to figuar it all out.
Thanks so much for any and all advice with this POS :mad::mad::puke:

I don't have the rig anymore. Take pictures of yours and I can probably tell you.

The temp sensor stick out forwards towards the radiator.

I know where the coolent temp sesor goes i just dont know witch plug is supposed to go to the sensor as there are at least 2 plugs from the harness with 2 wires in them each and i have no idea where they go.

Thanks!

PS i will try and get some pic today when i get home from work

Interesting that intake is for sure an 87

87 was the only year to have the temp sensor in the water outlet neck like that. Sticking straight up.

my sensor is located just like the pic above but it does not look anything like that. it apears that these pictures above from Ten4 are from a 1985 or older rig? you can see in one of his pictures that he has cut off the hose that runs down to that sensor i was taking about earlier so i think it has to do with smog and i think someone has tried to remove the smog system maybe. i need to figuar out if i have a 1985 intake or the 1989 intake. does anyone know how to identify the diferance?

Thanks again for all the help

You need to get it over to Craig's so you can put it next to his, and I'll even drive my junk over there so we can figure out the differences and similarities. Of course, Craig put his together so who knows if it's right!?:haha:

Thats why i have not gone over there yet......LOL but it runs other then the thrown rod....LMAO!! ooop's i'm starting to wounder if it is my Mass air sensor that is intermitting and letting the dam thing run sometimes and not others. i took it off the other day and cleaned it out with carb cleaner but that didn't seem to make any differance.:haha:

ok i found out that the senson/electronic valve i was refeing to that has a hose going underneath the manifold is a Idle Air Control Valve is that important to have hooked up?

could be running in limp mode.

I had every piece of smog stuff removed on my old ftoy, but that thing was still hooked up.

Whats limp mode. is that a computer default peramitors? i oviously have a check engine light on so it could very well be! Thanks so much for all the help your the only one that has even tried to help me other then Ten4/Dustin

Thanks again!
