So I ran into a old friend that has a 73 Fj40 that he bought 10 years ago and told me he is going to sell it,he told me I could buy it for $3,000,It is red w/a white top,lockright lockers fr and rr,3'' Rancho lift, 33'' buckshots full cage,mastercraft susp seats,straight 6,4sp,no rust!!!! straight body, all it needs is a slave cylinder,it been sitting for 5 years. Do you think this is a good deal?

Hi All:

After having a FJ40 for 12 years I have learned a couple things about them! :D

I'd inspect it very carefully for body tube and frame rot. Be on the lookout for bondo on the body!

I was with him when he originally purchased it,he has pretty much had it stored inside,the floor pans are clean,not sure about the frame? when he bought it, it was out of puyallup area and it was in a garage then. He says it probably worth 6k,cause the paints faded, and it needs a slave cyl. so it's not driveable. but he knows I have always wanted it so he will let it go for 3k I've seen cruisers anywhere from $1,500-$40k I'm going to look at it tomorrow I will take some pics and see what you guys think. Thanx

Last time I had seen it,it had a foot of snow on it,looks like he forgot to buckle the hood one day, the only place I found rust was where the rubber molding on the door closes on the passenger door sill. Otherwise between some simple green and elbow grease I'm not sure don't want to .:beatdeadhorse:

Not a bad price, though you'll spend that ,uch building it up (ask me as one who knows, and also owns a 73 fj40). Get rid of the boat anchor of an engine, disc brakes, and you're good to go! Did you mention if it had power steering?
 
Dear DIRTAHOLIC;
It's a nice rig that's definitely a good candidate for a full restoration. Never mind what others say about the engine, that F series block will still be running merrily along after 4 or 5 SBC motors have long since bitten the dust. Personally, I'd never swap out a a Toyota I6 for an American engine. Although the F block isn't the fastest in town, it's definitely the most reliable.

And forget about power steering! PS is strictly for pussies! Real men scoff at power steering! If Toyota would have wanted power steering on the FJ40 they 'd have put it on at the factory!

Nice find, my friend. it won't take much to switch it back to stock or a customized offroad rig. I'd definitely consider buying it if I were back in the USA.

I'm with Lamar on this one, the F series engine although underpowered will outlast anything else you could put in there.

If you're not going to go much bigger for tires you can convert over to a toyota power steering and it should last you just fine.

Check rear sill and frame all the way through for rust, it can be a killer and not something you wanna get stuck with.

Overall it looks like a nice rig and the price is definitely right so i'd say go for it and have some fun.
