Ok I'm putting my junk back together and I had to move the steering to the front of the axel. It's my only option at this point because of the rear links and brake rotor etc. so my question is and I have seen it done on my buddies Rockwell rig and it has took a hellacious beating for years without failure. I'm going to have to weld a piece for the steering ram to the chunk what's your alls opinions on this? I'm prepared for the ass dealings so let it eat let's hear opinions.

Also thought about welding this bolt head to the base and then making an upper support that would slide down on the top of bolt and bolt to the front pinion bolts and the side bearing cover :dunno:

Mine needed to go right where yours does, here is what I did:

Obviously that was before I welded the tab on to hold the ram, but you get the idea.
 
I don't know that I would weld to the chunk or not to be honest. I've never even considered it. I've done so successfully on Dana axles using pre and post heat.

How thick is the chunk right where you are needing to weld?

Only reason I wouldn't do it, is if you break the mount out if the chunk, then you have no steering and a busted chunk.
 
If I do weld to the chunk the base is roughly 1/2 or better and I'm with you on **** breaking if it can't be broke I'm the one who will break it every time :****: I think if I had a set of 2" shafts I'd have those broke or at least try
 
Cut this off of another rock. It worked for however long it was on there. I'm not real keen welding important stuff to just cast.

Moving the plug 4" to the side seems like a better idea than welding right to the cast chunk.
 
y'all with the cylinder ends mounted to the turd ever have the turds work loose from the housing?
 
There was a rockwell yota buggy around that passed hands a few times. I seen him rip the ram off the chunck at HPO a long time ago. It took a **** load of beatings but I wouldn't want a weak link. Your going the right wasy imo!

Yeah, it will work loose. We tighten up Mark's all the time. Just keep an eye on it.

I incorporated a small bracket coming off my bracket that bolts to a tab on the housing that is perpendicular to the axle tube to try and prevent that. So far it seems to have worked.
