in tha garage blowing smoke...
So I figured I would use these old rotors off a buddies Dodge truck, to make a work bench , 6 x 6 post were a little wobbly, and I'm to trying to straighten up as much as I can.. My question is, after welding each one on.. I think I remember both of them doing it, I for sure know that one made a loud pop, i've had this happen before when welding, I kinda get what's happening I think.. With it getting so hot. The question is what the hell Pops like that?? There's no signs of any cracks that I can see, but from the sound of it there should have been. It was so loud that it 1 AM, I stopped what I was doing because I thought my girl was gonna come down pissed bout waking the baby. I know some of you are ALOT more experienced than me at welding ... Just figured I would ask it's been driving me crazy. Getting it too hot? What the hell could pop like it broke a weld and not show signs of anything? Thanks in advance fellas it's just been driving me nuts. :dblthumb:

Cast Iron will produce popping if not heated correctly before and after welding.

Popping is cracking. No way around it. They can be subsurface or just hidden but that noise is the material seperating somewhere, visible or not.

Thanks fellas. By the sound of this POP there's a huge crack somewhere. **** was loud. Really loud. Makes sense, its not all that warm In garage, and I burned the piss outta it filling some big gaps when leveling. Thanks again. Learn somthing new everyday.

Big pops don't necessarily mean big cracks in my experience. A very small crack can make a very loud pop.

It popped and cracked because the materials are different and cool at different rates. Next time try wrapping it in an old leather welding jacket and let it cool slower.
