I have read and re read some material on setting points using feeler gauges and a dwell meter. What I read states you need to check timing when using the dwell meter, but says nothing about it when you use feeler gauges. Do I need to set timing again if I use feeler gauges? If so, it will require me to bring my timing light along for the trip.

The engine in question is a 455 Oldsmobile. This is more for just in case it decides to quit firing on my 885 mile journey back home. I am bringing some spare parts to include: ignition coil, distributor cap, button, points with condenser and a thermostat. Why risk not having something that could be a huge problem that costs so little.

Points are easy! Turn the engine till your high point on the distributor is lined up with the points tab fold a piece of notebook paper two times slide it over till the paper drags tighten the screws and rock out!

This is in an engine bay of an RV. I am not so certain how easy it would be to do that. But, I will take that into consideration if it comes to it.

Ohh! Yea! As long as the dog house comes out fairly easy it won't be bad.

Man, I wish I could come along and film this epic trip your getting ready to make, 800 miles in a 40 year old RV you know nothing about! You sir are a very brave man.

No sir, I am an idiot. But I do have fun. Something about the adventure and the unknown makes me happy. Roadkill does it with much more mechanical knowledge and a bigger budget. The worst thing that can happen is for it to cause me to die. Next would be a blown motor, transmission or a bearing failure that causes it to lock up and flip down the highway but I survive but in a coma. ;D Short of that would be a fire that burns it completely to the ground. Next to best case is something small that makes me tow it back to my home town. And, best case scenario is I get to listen to a big block V8 purring for 14-16 hours with only my thoughts.

You probably don't have time before the trip, but this is a good option.

That will be on my shopping list when I get it back home.

All packed up. It will be nice to unplug for a couple of days. This should be good for 885 miles, right? Either way, I will be in la la land till at least Thursday.

Any issues near the Texas/LA border, feel free to shoot me a pm. Good luck.

Will do. Bout to go make some sandwiches and set both alarms. Flight leaves out at 5:45 am and I have an hour drive to get there.

Man you are brave but it sounds fun at the same time

Usually I have pretty good luck on these type trips. Last decent long range trip was for an RV. Two blow outs and 14 hours from just below Tampa. New tires with one bad valve stem. Put a bulge in the inner dually tire and that caused a few hour delay waiting on help. First was replaced using included tools and the leveling jacks to get it off the ground.

Then again, I've had them blow up halfway home and just kind of wing it at that point. Not really looking to hitch hike again, but sometimes you just go along for the ride.

you do realize that by carrying those spare parts you won't need them. ps what state are you going to for this soon to be man cave

I am hoping not to need the parts. Sitting in Dallas/Fort Worth about to hea to Abilene, TX.

The best part is that I take 6 to 20 to 65 to 69 and I am home. The directions are more complicated to go 5 miles to my store.
