Do we have a welding thread on here?

Yes sir, those are all weld beads almost 2" buildup, on a 46x66 area 1700lbs of .120 mig wire.

Each weld bead is roughly 2" wide x 12-18" long and 3/16-1/4 high. All hand layed.

Last project was over 13k of wire, and 22" thick in the deep end. Have some pics of that if anyone is interested.

Why? Is the question I have.

Seconded.

I'm going to guess it's building up a surface that has worn away.

This ^^^

That is a bed on a 2500 ton forging press. It had been beat down and re cut almost 2" over the last 35 years. So they wanted it built back up, so it can be recut just like the day it left the factory.

The big weld job I mentioned was a design change, I will post some pics in a bit.

Before

After welded, and rough machine.

This is a "wedge" design. A wedge is supposed to sit in the pocket to make the bed parallel to the sides(as seen in top pic.) Then to change the height for different dies you just slide the wedge up/down. Sounds good in theroy, but after a little time the wedge gets beat down and dosent slide. So you have to shim anyway. Since the wedge acts as a lamination it can result in very inconsistent parts. So the solution is to weld the pocket solid. Makes a stronger base too.

Since most of these frames are 1 piece cast steel they must be pre heated and maintain 400* during the welding process, then taken up to 1000-1200* to stress relieve.

FYI...www.weldersupply.com has the Miller 211 with AutoSet on sale for $1079 right now and Miller has a $100 rebate on it so...$979 shipped to your door. They ship quick...and I got my rebate from Miller 2 weeks later. I love it!
I'm thinking about that one too although the new 215 multi process machine has my eye too.

So I don't have alot of pics of my welding but here are a few pics of the new spool gun I just picked up with my Miller 252. I've been really impressed with every function it has so far.. not a pro by any means but I enjoy welding more and more everyday..
