22r Igniter/coil problems

Well my 84 4 runner was running fine, until last week when it just died when it was idling and wouldn't start again. I've come to the conclusion that it's either the distributor or the coil, and I recently picked up one of each. I'm pretty sure it's just the igniter coil, but the one I got isn't the same as my old one. It will plug in to only one place rather than both places that my original one would plug into. So does that mean I should return it and find one with the same plugins, or should I rewire it? My original has only two plugins on the whole thing and plugs in just fine, but this new one has 3 different plugins, and only one of the plugs fit. I'm afraid to try and start it with that, because I don't want to fry my system or anything like that and I just don't think it would have a way to keep the circuit going through the ignitor. Any ideas? Thanks for all your help,

CJ

Sounds like you ended up with the wrong one. I would get the correct one. Take the old one in with you when you return the other one so they can match it.

Dang this is killing me. I'm half tempted to just go buy another coil igniter from 410 auto wrecking for 175 bucks, but if that's not the problem then I would've wasted money for nothing. God this really sucks Lol. I want to get this thing running again, it was supposed to be a friends house this weekend starting to get lifted :cheer: . Anyone have any coils for an 84 22r engine for sale or anything? Thanks for all your helps guys, and what is the conversion you were talking about junkyard jim?

Yeah, I will probably end up getting one of those D.U.I's, because I just had a friend come over with his igniter and his distributor, and we replaced the module inside the distributor and plugged in the other igniter and still didnt' get any spark to the cap or anything. 350 bucks is like all of my lift money I have, but it seems like it would be worth it and I would just have to save up for a lift later on or something.

Before you go and spend all your money on that, I would try and get it working stock if it were me. You would be really mad if you spent all that money on that just to find out it wasn't working because you blew a fuse and the coil wasn't getting power or something simple.

Before you go and spend $350 for all that I probably have a complete dist., coil and ignitor you can have for $100. Give me a ring 253-686-7118.

Have you bothered to test the coil & igniter or are you just throwing parts at it?

I'm not getting any spark from the igniter at all. My next solution is that the wiring is bad or something on the truck. Maybe my regulater went out or something? I've replaced the module in the dist, and I've been trying to get the igniter to spark, but I still haven't had any luck. I've even tried a whole new igniter that a friend has and uses on his truck, but it still didn't get a spark.

not tryin to jack your thread but, im havin the same problem with my 86, i replaced cap roter plugs and wires and the coil. and all i get is a really fait orange spark and it wont fire. so i know how ya feel buddy its frustraiting

The igniter doesn't make spark. You wont get spark from it. The igniter makes the coil spark.

You keep talking about an igniter and a distributor. I have yet to hear you say you tested or swapped the coil. Check your PMs.

I have had two different trucks have the ignitor die in them. It was going to cost so much money to replace them with new (rather not have an old that was goign to die again) that i went with an MSD6a box and coil. Easy to do on a carbed truck, if efi you need a tach adapter to make it work right.

I thought the igniter is the same as the coil, because the part says coil w/igniter on it and thats what you plug into the distributor cap and to the distributor itself? Maybe I'm wrong or something, but I tried two different coils w/igniters or whatever, and still didn't get a spark :booo:

2 seperate parts but if youi swapped them both out completely and you try'd a known good ignitor and coil then the problem is elsewhere.

You can check to make sure your distributer is triggering the coil, check for voltage at the ignitor, make sure its grounded etc.

Check your fuses?
