This is badass !!

Per Fourwheeler Mag blog :

The new housing is going to change things in a very big way because it will allow you to step up to the superior strength of a 14-bolt differential for a fraction of the cost of other custom 1-ton Dana 60s, 70s or 80s aftermarket axles.

In a nutshell, this is going to be the new hot setup for those of us who want the ultimate in strength, weight reduction and cost savings.

The design changes the highly desirable 14 bolt differential to a drop-out style third member, similar to a Ford 9-inch, yet, you get more ground clearance than a Dana 60, plus you get the super cool looking fabricated plate style housing.

We expect everyone from rock crawlers, mud boggers and even desert racers to consider this new axle arrangement for future vehicle builds.

14 Bolt Basics

Nobody will argue about the strength of a corporate 14-Bolt. The design features a 10.5-inch or 11.5-inch ring gear depending on the vintage and brand of truck it came out of. Additionally the 14-Bolt offers a 3rd pinion support bearing, which adds significantly to the differential's strength. What's more, the Cooperate 14 Bolt differential is the least expensive differential to lock up. Detroit lockers for a 14-bolt typically run in the $400.00 range. Another bonus is parts availability; you can find items like bearings, races, shims and even axle shafts almost anywhere at relatively lower prices than a Dana axle with the same strength.

Sounds like the perfect axle, right?

What people don't like about the 14-Bolt is their low ground clearance design. As a result, many builders and home mechanics shave off inches to improve ground clearance, which is cool if you have the resources, time and patience to do so.

The New Game:

We received the press release shown below last week.

After reading it we realized we had to see it first. So we stopped by the Spanish Trail Arena just as the guys from Portal Tek were unloading their trailer to set up their booth.

AGAIN, YOU GOT IT HERE FIRST!!!!!

PORTAL-TEK AXLES ANNOUNCES THE UNVEILING OF THE ALL NEW SUPER-14â"¢ AXLE AT EASTER JEEP SAFARI 2009

Portal-Tek Axles is proud to announce the unveiling of a revolutionary new axle solution at Easter Jeep Safari 2009. The Super-14â"¢ will be on display at the Spanish Trails Arena April 9, 2009. The Super-14â"¢ is a fresh take on the infamous Corporate 14-bolt rear end. The Super-14â"¢ incorporates a new drop-out style differential gear case. This all-aluminum third member case utilizes off the shelf Corporate 14-bolt gear sets and lockers. Imagine a 10.5 inch ring gear, hypoid pinion gear with 3 HUGE bearings, and the ability to house it all in an aluminum drop out style case. The architecture of the Super-14â"¢ is significantly more compact than a conventional Corporate 14-Bolt axle. The symmetrical bolt pattern surrounding the third member, will allow Super-14â"¢ to operate in high or low pinion applications. The case size of the Super-14â"¢ is roughly 1” larger in height and width than a standard Ford 9” case. Super-14â"¢ will be available in front and rear axle application. Fabricated axle housings will be available in mild steel or Chro-Moly. Magnesium third member case construction will be available for desert race applications. The Super-14â"¢ is lightweight, wickedly strong and convenient! Super-14â"¢ will set the new standard in axles regardless of how tight your budget is. Please visit www.portal-tek.comhttp:// for details and updates.

The folks from Portal Tek told us that this new housing will be in production in six weeks.

The cost: under $2,000.00

What you get: The new housing, the aluminum third member, pinion supports and shims.

So, basically you take all the internals from your existing 14-Bolt axle and swap it all into this bad boy for the ultimate in light-weight, strength and ground clearance.

Talk about value.

Portal Tek is currently taking orders, so call 801-550-8841 and tell them you read about it on Four Wheeler.com!

Be sure that we will bring you an exclusive build-up story on the Super 14 axle very soon in Four Wheeler magazine

I believe ( didnt catch it in the article, may have missed it ) that Ballistic Fab has been commissioned on doing the axle housing's . I read on PBB were they mentioned they were glad to be a part of it. Man, what a killer setup that is !

Wow - that is cool - not bad price either :****:

yes its a balls housing. it said that in the 4wheeler article online like 3 months ago, and was to be released at EJS.
AL third, remains to be seen. In standard rotation, I can't see ever having a problem. As long as the housing doesn't flex around that 3rd bearing in a coast side app, it should be fine. If there is any deflection at all, those gears will separate and lunch. I assume they know this and have addressed it. They need to cast both styles (if they can get a gear cutter to cut them) for a pinion on both sides of the ring for low and high in each app so you can be on the drive side regardless.
Axles manufacturers are who need to step up, as well as locker makers for other spline counts (37 or 40 if in a dana pitch.)

Wish this would Have been out 2 months ago . Guess ill just have to wait till my hp 60 rear blows apart .. :wtflol:

You should see my account and stock portfolio :puke: :drinkers:
