22re, no power, running rough, glowing manifold.

i have a 86 4runner, 22re, 5spd, 5.29's 38x14.50tsl sx, and dual cases. recently its been running kinda rough. occasionaly it will spudder and try to cut out on me. when im playin in the snow i cant hold second in single low on any kinda of hill. it loses all power. when i have it at high r's for a few minutes the manifold starts to glow orange. its only getting about 7-8 mpg. the other day when i shut it off, it wanted to keep running. i thought i got some bad gass, so i topped it off from a 1/4 tank, and dumped in a can of seafoam in the tank and that helped a little bit. on the highway it was a little better but still not 100%.and its still getting crappy mileage, and gutless in the hills. i checked the timing and put in new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and air filter. anybody have any ideas on what it would be?

Did the fuel psi Reg take a crap,allowing fuel past the diaphram directly into intake?I'd pull the vacuum hose going to the regulator, and see if it's wet w/ fuel--->if it is,that's likely your problem......

Could be. Maybe a difference in 2 stroke to 4 stroke? I used to race motocross in a 125 class amateur when I was like 15. Dont remember a lot about the tuning, that was Dad. I just rode.

But, after working on many cars as an entry level tech (granted, I was entry level) at three different shops, glowing exhaust is usually either late/no ignition timing, too much fuel, or clogged exhaust. At one of those shops, I worked on nothing but classic European cars. I would tune carb setups on Lotus', Jags, MGs, Triumphs, BMWs, etc all day. Too much fuel would cause the exhaust to turn red.

Two of the reasons I stated are because the fuel to continues to burn INSIDE the exhaust manifold instead of inside the combustion chamber. One by simply not completely burning all the fuel before exiting the combustion chamber and it continues to burn in the manifold (too rich), the other by having the overly rich exhaust from a cylinder due to lack of or late spark hit the hot exhaust from another cylinders exhaust and burn inside the manifold (lack of/late/poor spark). The other reason, is simply a build up of hot gasses in the system. The build up, coincidently, is usually due to a cat that has died from an overly rich running condition also (clogged exhaust).

This topic used to come up all the time on the forum for Rotary engines which I used to use when I raced RX-7s. 9 times out of 10, it was an ignition or too rich running condition causing the problem (IE - new carb setup not tuned right, new MSD igniton not wired correctly, etc)

However, Im not saying Im right. Im just saying what Ive seen.

I haven't read through this thread but it sounds like your timing is retard to much.
 
i think i got her fingered out.i put a new knock sensor in it, and rechecked the timing, it was quite a bit off. now it runs good and has good power. but the mileage seems to be pretty bad still. and everyonce in a while ill stand on it in second and it will fall on its face. any ideas? what kind of mileage are the rest of you guys getting on the road with this setup? offroad?
 
if its something intermittent then i dont think it would be a timing issue, which would yield constant problems. your computer is reading something and reacting improperly either due to a failing sensor, or failing computer, i think.
 
ok i found the problem.

pulled that shabangabang out, and she runs like a top. actually i threw in a new coolant temp sensor, and replaced a couple ground wires that looked a little shady. seems to have fixed the problem!
