I have a loud ticking 22re. Its coming from one of the front 2 pistons. I was told it culd be rod bearings or a connecting rod? It sounds like its in the valvetrain. I was told that because there might be a bad bearing which would cause some play its the piston hitting the head and thats why it sounds like its coming from up top. How can I tell if its a rod bearing or connecting rod? Or maybe its something else i dunno. It had plenty of power, and the oil pressure was good. It was just REALLY loud... Im going to go pull the pan now, ill update soon.

if its not making noise its not running :redneck:

pull the pan and wiggle the rods to check clearances. IMO thats the quickest and easiest way to find out if its bottom end or not.

toyota tick ...sounds normal :corn: id drive it till it goes ..it will take it while probly mines been ticking since i got it 6years ago

Ok so I think I found the issue...I pulled the pan and what do I find??? A bunch of plastic, and couple chunks of metal...So im pretty sure its the timing chain. I could see a big chunk missing from the timing cover..see the pic...

I have never broke a chain or guide, so i dont know what its going to sound like. I think the chain was hitting the timing cover and thats what the sound is...

Check the timing cover to see if when ever the guide broke the chain wore a hole into the water jacket.

Ok so I got the timing cover off and inspected it more closely. it has a few wear marks and scuffs where then chain hit it...It was also welded so im assuming someone has been in here before. Another interesting thing is that all the guides were in place still...:eeek: So the piece i found was from an earlier break? Anyway my main concern is that the chain hitting the cover was the sound i was hearing. I mean it broke a piece off! Ill post another pic asap

Replace the chain its only twenty dollors or so and get the sprokets while your at it Its probly the orig. Equ.

Ive baught two yota's with back yard rebuilds on them one had ben 30 over and rebuilt twice and the tool sheds used the old chain.... It gets even more slack if your block or head has been decked. I would also look at getting a new tenshener (spelling fawked) All the cycleing as the chin is slaping around in there will cause it to were and not hole as much oil presure. Some might argue that but it's peace of mind

I planned on getting a whole kit, even though this one seems intact. I also need a new timing cover...But like i said I need to know if this is where my noise is coming from. I would hate to get it all back together and then it didnt fix it

If the guides are in place then the sound isn't coming from the chain hitting the cover. It is common to find chunks of old guide in the pan, Ive pulled a few apart with a couple different guides in there... :redneck:

Buuut if you are dead set on getting the whole kit I'd HIGHLY recommend ordering it from engnbldr.com. You can get everything you need for a damned good price and fast shipping. :D

How is your valve adjustment? the fsm calls for .008 and .012 but I've always done them at .007 and .011. My engine doesn't make noise when it runs other than the faint ticking of the injectors firing.

The guides are in place from what I can see...If what you say is true then how on earth did it break the timing cover?

I had several 22r's where the timing chain wore through the water jacket. Was told by a mechanic when stranded in eastern Oregon that a toyota oil filter has a component that holds the oil pressure to the tensioner when the engine isn't running, while yer run of the mill filter does not. He said that if I didn't buy the toyota filter it would happen again. Don't know if it's BS or any help but there you go.:D

You found piece of guide in the pan right? Doesn't that say right there that it has happened before? :;

What unclestripey is talking about is the "anti dranback valve" that is in the filter. Pretty much every oil filter sold now has them.

Well after reading on pbb it seems i have a bigger issue..The noise is constant, apparently timing chain noise is not.

:booo:

True. Mechanic told my grandpa the same thing back in 87 when he bought his 4runner
