I have laid hands on a set of 5 tons, and my cousin has a set fo fronts I'm supposed to sell for him. they are way too big for anything but crushing cars in the 80's. the shafts are strong enough in the 2.5 2" variety, the 3rd is overbuilt to hell (as is a dana 80), the outers are what are weak. weak is a relative term. mainly the knuckles and king pins. I don't konw of a KP failure, but a 3/4" pin is bound to fail. I would think he'd have some billet chromo knuckles made up with thicker flanges everywhere and run the rest. everything else is pretty failure free.
