Matt, i've built an XJ. My dad has it now and I can send you or post some pics. It's as bad as one can be built with the factory axles housings in place. Run down and my opinion
XJ HP 30 with good shafts, yukon gears and spartan locker
8.25 rear with yukon's and detroit both 4.88
Hydro assist, Here's the part I like, i bought a rough country 4" long arm kit, put Liquid metal industry sliders on the rear leaves. It flexes and rides unbelievable, I cut the absolute crap out of the body and had Patrick Murrah re create it with some tube fenders and bumper tie ends. We run Q78 swampers on it and it's an absolute beast. only regret it the weight of the wheels
I personally have a pro rock 60 F/R ZJ with atlas and clayton long arm kit, ARB bumpers, really a high dollar build in its day. it's geared 4:56 and is far more powerful and obviously will take more abuse
But the result is dollar for dollar the XJ is the best of the two because it's budget would be less than half the Z's and it will go places it has no business being in. And the long arm slider combo rides just as good as the Z, the sliders we bought are pure beef and have a progressive angle, both are awesome, but without all the beef parts the ZJ has, id choose the xj
