5spd to auto

would it be worth the trouble to swith my 5 spd xj over to an automatic? i really want an auto but if its not worth it i can deal with it any suggestions? also i am having alot of engine problems just got it and the guy said it was bored 40 over and sometimes it starts but when it does it runs like crap well thanks for listening!

Hi All:

Just get the POS running well enough to sell it.

It is much easier and cheaper to simply sell your manual tranny XJ and purchase an auto Cherokee, than swapping the transmissions.

I had a 5 speed in a YJ and swapped it out for a XJ 4 speed auto (AW4) and I love it. I run it on a manual control push button set up from awshifting.com. It has a Tconverter lock up as well. It was a lot of work to do so it may be easier to sell yours and get one with the auto allready in it.

well i think i am gonna have to give it a try. i had been looking at jeeps for a while and didnt find much out there and i kinda bought this as a impulse! well if anyone has a tranny that would be nice or has done it on a cherokee. how much did it cost you to do the swap green yj? thanks for the help!

does it really matter about my punctuality if so i guess i better work on that

also if anyone might have any suggestions why my rig dont want to start and when it does it does not run right. i know the motor was pulled and put 40 over thats all i really know about it.

i had a cherokee (if i remember right xj = cherokee right?) with an auto and i apsolutely hated it, for the things i did with it. Take video of it with a good microphone on a camera, might be able to help with the engine running like **** comment you said then. Or atleast stear you in the right direction of fixing or selling

also engine size and year it is also would be helpful more then likely. Was it rebuilt by a shop and did the guy have proof if it was? More then likely he probably didnt hook up all the vacumes, or is off a tooth on timing hell, even just could be a miss or something of the sort could be a million things really video is definately best if you have the camera equipment.

The tranny you can get for under 200 usually. The controller I have was about 130 it bypasses all of the electronics like the VSS and the transmission control computer. The reason why some people dont like the AW4 is because 1st and 2nd are not separated so it likes to upshift at the crappiest time. You actully have to push a button for it to shift like paddle shifters on a hot hod, so you can wind out each gear like clutch. Thats why I like it. Plus I dont have to do the three foot tango while I'm wheeling it. It does run hot so plan on running a large cooler.

so all i really need to buy is the tranny and then that controller? and where could i get that? i just pulled and put a engine in my freinds cherokee so i think i should be able to ge that done with his help thank u for the help by the way i really want to get this done
