71 CJ5 build

Starting to make progress again. The ram is mounted and tacked in place. I got the CBR pump mounted and pulley installed. I used a Goatbuilt bracket to mount the CBR pump. Then I wanted to get the radiator mounted and grill shell set in place. Mission accomplished. The cross tube between the hoops will be removable so I can pull the motor and get the radiator out. Ordered the tube bungs today for that. My plasma table guy has been busy with holiday stuff so hoping to get the winch plate, floor panels, fuel cell mount, and battery box all buzzed out soon. Still need to weld out the chassis and do the interior, but then it will be onto getting it running. Really hoping to have this on the trail this summer.

That is some good work. For me the biggest thing in finding space has been finding the small 1/8th inch off mistakes and having to go back and redo something form earlier in the build. Keep it up.

Just came off a 4 day weekend of mostly buggy building. It was much needed and almost therapeutic. I knocked out pretty much all of the tube work I wanted to get done. I may still add a little up front, but the back half of the tube work is done. I made a stack about 3" tall of custom brackets out of cardboard to be sent off to my buddy with the plasma table. I drew up the winch plate mount, a bracket for the hydro cooler, the trunk area floor and fuel cell brackets, and other misc stuff. I'm looking forward to welding all of that stuff in. Then I can focus on the pedal assemblies. I don't like where I have the brake pedal mocked up right now.

Added the semi circles as dirt and debris drains and the center holes will be dimple died for some strength and for looks.

Got the rig torn down for weld out. I still have to fab up the belly pan and cross member, but the majority of the fab work/tube work is done. I started putting some interior panels in. The trunk area, I think, turned out nice with the dimples dies. Swag offroad makes a nice product there. I got the console and floor pans cut out of 14 gauge steel. The rest will most likely be aluminum to help shave some weight.
Some pics. That's my wife throwing down some welds. She fits in tight spaces well.

I've been ordering some of the final pieces to the puzzle, hydro lines, bump stops, tabs, stuff for panels, fuel lines, etc. I got the fuel cell in, console in, shifters installed. I've been making cardboard templates from cardboard for interior panels and skins. I'm picking up a press brake from my uncle next week to help with the panels. Still a ton of work to do, but it's really getting close.

Waiting on a bunch of parts to show up so I started buttoning up some other projects. I got some cardboard templates for the body panels made up. Built the bones of the belly skid. Still need to add a plate of aluminium and skin it with UHMW for the belly. I chopped the brake pedal for a better feel and need to mount the brake assembly and throttle pedal.

Haha! Chad sent me a message the other day of, I think, his 3rd rig since his black and silver Renegade. That was a nice rig.

Keep up the good work.
I'm trying to keep this momentum. Got the driveline today. I'm going to get it bolted up tonight and the carrier bearing bracket welded in.

Man it was awesome, I get too attached to stuff I guess, I don't see how anyone could build a rig, as nice as his or yours and get rid of it :wtflol:

Yeah yeah! yall rub it in a little more! Ive got something in the works that will be pretty sweet! On the other hand.... Learn from my mistakes and wheel the **** out of it! Its coming together very nicely, take your time don't get in a rush, you will be glad you you did in the long run!

Over the weekend I was able to finally mount the cowl and hood in a semi permanent fashion. I took the windshield brackets off of the cowl and welded some tabs to the cage to bolt into the sides of the cowl. i used a piece of angle iron to lift the cowl up a quarter inch so the hood and cowl gap was straight. I will rivnut the lip of the cowl to the angle iron for another bolt on point. I can also drill into the flat side of the angle iron and rivnut the holes to bolt on the body panels when that time comes.
The Front driveline is a two piece unit with the WOD carrier bearing. After doing some research and talking to a few people I decided to use a half inch piece of UHMW to space the carrier bearing frame bracket from the carrier bracket with the idea that if it binds up too bad it could spit the UHMW out. Thanks for the idea slravenel!
My bump stops, trick tabs, and fuel lines, fittings, filter, and pump should all be here tomorrow. I'm out of town this weekend so won't get much done until next weekend.

Floor panels are in. I had some holes cut out so I could dimple die them to let mud and stuff clean out easier. Plus I think they look kind of cool. I started making some interior panel templates, but I'll need to get some more small tube to use as a skeleton on the trans tunnel area. I started working on some gussets for the shock tabs for the front and back and ran out of welding wire. I ran to Lowe's for a small spool and came back and was out of shielding gas. So I didn't get a whole lot done yesterday.

I had some spare square tube laying around so I put some support in the back of the chassis so I didn't kill the frame if someone had to pull me out of a hole aggressively.

A buddy came out a couple of weekends ago so we could weigh his Toyota for rear coilovers.

Last week and weekend projects...
Moved this bar out of the way of the throttle pedal. Now I won't have to sit sideways in my seat.

I stared at the interior for a couple of hours Saturday. I started building a skeleton with 1" tube. Got that done and made cardboard templates for the passenger side. I'll work on the driver side and behind the seats this week.
