Okay, 1986 Cherokee with a 2.8 V6. Has fuel issues. Have to keep your foot in the gas to keep the engine running. Engine is non-fuel injected. What is the most likely cure for this? (No, I already have a Toyota. This is for the kid.) It kinda sounds like the fuel pump is bad, or the filter is blocked, but because it has a carb, there may be some underlaying issues with that too.

theres Only one salution for that problem, PUSH THAT PEICE OF **** OF A CLIFF!!!:cheer:

If it were a fuel pump or filter flow issue it'd die when you hit the gas, not what you describe. Accellerator pump diaphragm? Common issue on 22R carbs. Watch the carb throat while someone pumps the pedal, you won't see much if any gas come out if it's busted.

Yeah, I agree. Stop fiddling with it and swap in a 4.0L drivetrain.

Okay. Not made of money. If I was, the kid would keep the car he has. The rig is cheap, and I think the fix is easier than people are making it out to be.

Or maybe there's some other insight you would like to partake? Isn't the 2.8 a Chevy/GM engine? I know Jeep was buying their powerplants from other carmakers for a while.

So replace/rebuild the carb? If that is the issue?

Remember, this a is a Jeep, not a Toy.

In all seriousness, check for fuel delivery issues. It could also be at Catalytic converter problem. If the cat has fallen apart, and clogged the muffler, that could cause the problem you are describing.

Most folks don't waste time with the 2.8 motor. If you want more in depth answers, www.naxja.org is the place to ask.

I had that problem with a Chev 305. That was fun....

Let me make this clear. I am thinking of buying a rig off Craigslist. It has this issue with the fuel system. All I was after was some guidelines of discovering what the problem might be and what the hopefully correct resolution would be.

I need to find something that my son can drive, and doesn't cost the proverbial arm, leg and left nut.

anyone with ANY knowledge with vehicles knows not to buy a cherokee with a 2.8, your wasting your time even posting this thread,if i wouldve known you were some fawktard i wouldnt sell my subie to you in the firstplace :awesomework: "sheesh"

Thanks to the good information I got here, I'm passing on this Jeep.

Now for those that care, not everyone knows everything about every fawkin' engine ever made. Personal experience brings out the most knowledge about engines. Case in point, I will not buy a car with a Chev 305 after my experience of owning one. I will not buy anything that is Mitsubishi, after owning a Dodge Colt with a Mitsubishi engine.

The only Jeep I've owned, was an 84 Scrambler with the 258 in line 6. Great engine. Lots of power.

Granted, if I do go out and buy a truck with e diesel engine, I can't go by experience, I have to ask around. That's why I asked about the Jeep 2.8 liter engine. Is it a Chev engine? Or did Jeep put too much money in a failure?

you should be able to find a 4.0 powered jeep on craigslist with ease.

I know. I was trying to save some bucks so I can work on my own rig to make it more trail worthy. But after the advise from Karl, I figured it was going to cost about the same as getting one that actually works already, and with a non 2.8 liter hamster wheel.

Jeep got the 2.8L and 2.5 Chev motors (used till '83 in Jeeps and smaller AMC cars when AMC built their own 4 cyl) as part of a deal with GM over the AMC guys "fixing" the issues with the Buick V6 and selling it back to GM. AMC was supposed to get a GM rotary engine with transverse mounted FWD setup to go into the Pacer. The Pacer had to be widened to accept the inline 6 (the flying changes made to the design made them use much heavier metal and made the car much wider than originally planned)
GM sold AMC the narrow bearing engines (that were failing at a pretty high rate in their own vehicles till they widened the bearings and rebalanced the engine internally) but some people will snag the newer motors with EFI and swap them in (including the 3.4L Camaro and S10 crate motors)
I would have checked the choke on that Jeep was opening (would make it chug and stall from flooding if not) and then cross wire the plugs and make it backfire to try to clear crud out of the idle circuit. (I have to do that now and then with carbed vehicles that DON'T have a vacuum power valved carb, even though I do it on the Motorcraft 2100 in my '73 J4000)

Okay, I know I posted it elsewhere, but we did find a great 90 Cherokee with the 4.0L engine.

The son is ready to go mud splashing right after we get the cooling system figured out.

But that's another thread...
