Working on the trail-gear steering pump for my chev 350 and ran into a slight problem... it conflicts with the alternator. so It was suggested that I find a passenger side mount for the alternator.

Wow, easier said then done, I've been looking around but haven't had much luck. Its a short water pump too.

Anyone have or know where I can find one to fit? the best fit would be the upper passenger side of the engine it looks like... now if I can only find the bracket that does that.

hmm that looks like a power steering mount, I need an alternator mount

Make one....

My buddy managed to fab up the PS bracket, but didn't have time to get an alternator bracket made. And my fab skills are, egh not quite there yet.

However, I think I found something.. I 'think' it will work:

Yup it is a pump mount... You can put the pump on either side of the engine with that bracket. As far as mounting the alternator on the passenger side you need to prvide some more info. Short pump or long pump? Either way you can walk into a local retard filled parts store and buy either setup. The brackets for a long pump setup look like this. Look it's even available in shiny chrome so you can impress the ladies in the trail...

If you have a short pump you'll need these brackets. They are available in chrome too go figure, the ladies will be all over your rig after these babies go on there..

Its a short pump. I saw the top picture you showed on sunday, and was disappointed it was for LWP only. =(

Haven't seen the brackets below you reference, I'll look for those. They mount to the holes on the pump, not the block, right?

Bracket D is the header bracket. The one pictured is a driver side version but it is available ina passenger side version too. Bracket A bolts to D in the slotted holes so you can align the pulleys correctly by sliding the alternator forward and aft. Bracket C is the tensioner, it bolts to either the upper passenger side water pump bolt or using part B to a hole in the front of the head. You can mount it pretty much anyway you need to with those parts.

hmm I don't have headers, instead I have the ram exhaust manifold thingys (not exactly sure)
So I think I need one that bolts to the water pump (SWP) or directly to the block. there are three holes (the old Alternator was bolted to the block)

Need help??? (can't believe I'm possibly adding to my to do list....:haha:)

haha thanks Kev, well we replaced the O2 sensor this weekend, I just need the right alternator bracket. It should be a quick job if I can find the right bracket. If you know what I need, I'd love the help!

That and my new trail gear springs are being a pain in the a$$ to install... my rig is sitting on blocks at my house, hopefully I can figure this all out thursday and friday.

Well, The short WP kit mentioned earlier should do the trick, although I've never been fond of that looooooong adjuster bracket style...I usually modify a later style bracket to work with the short pump, or find the right combo of pulleys to accomodate the short pump with the later style bracket...:awesomework:

Yes, that be the one, just allows too much vibration...unless you support the back of the alternator with another bracket(if it doesn't already have one in the kit)...Also keep in mind how little belt contact there is on the water pump pulley, just a squealing belt and overheating issue waiting to happen!!!

you can put the alternator on the top on the drivers side and the steering pump on the bottom, I just put a trailgear pump on my 350 with the alternator on the drivers side, and short water pump

hmm and you managed to get your alternator to clear the piping from the steering pump? I might have to take another look at that. My bracket doesn't as neat as yours, but how are you tensioning the steering pump?

All my hoses are away from the alternator. I leaving for work now but when I get home ill take some pics of it all finished to show ya where my hoses go and how its tensioned:awesomework:

my alternator is mounted to my exhaust mainifold and the tensioning is done at the alternator. the only thing i dont like about how mine came out is the high pressure line is going through the belt. if I need to put on a new belt i have to unhook that line, put a belt on, reconnect th line and bleed the system. that could be changed by getting a new hose.

Heres a few more pics

oh wow, very interesting! you have the same belt for all 4 pulleys....

I'm pretty sure the PS pump was aligned to the middle pully on the crankshaft, so it doesn't line up with the water pump. but I can see why they don't interfere.

In my setup, I have/had two belts, one for the crankshaft/waterpump/alt and the other for crankshaft/PS I'll find out tomorrow night if its possible to re-align the bracket for the PS to do what you did.

Wow, that sure isn't much belt wrap around the P/S pump pulley...how's it work Dobber??? (No squeal?)... I like the 2-belt system w/ long long water pump better myself (if you've got the room).

got a quote from Napa today.. $131... ughhhh for the long water pump.

... however, I think that will be the route I'll go. There just seems to be more options for the LWP
