Isn't square only stronger on the corners? If Im understanding your facts right then you just seconded what I've been saying in 7075 will return to shape better than 6061.
first question - no, it's stronger in bending because it has a larger moment of inertia. There's more material further from the centroid than with round (the corners). the more area further from the center the better - ideally we should be using I or T beams but those are hard to tap and not so pretty but they would be lighter and stronger. Also you don't really need the center of the bars - it does hardly anything but AL tube is $$$
quick guess 1.75 square is similar to 2.25" round
