Big Block in a Toy? (possible?)

Having never put a Rat engine in a Yota...

I would guess that:
the valve covers will hit the brake booster
the firewall will need serious "notching" to clear the distributor
fuel lines and pump might be tricky as well

The BB's came with a short and a long water pump. Chances are you will need the short one so as to fit everything in the engine compartment. I'm guessing that the original BB has the long water pump and if so... the accessory brackets will not line up.

Also make certain the oil filter and/or the harmonic balancer doesn't come too close to the front end or one decent jump and you will be causing serious damage.

I own a 396BB, 402BB and a 454BB and NONE of them are easy to keep cool. You will probably hate life if you run a BB in your Yota. I've seen them in FJ40's and Jeep's and they are almost always running super hot while on the trails.

I agree with most everyone else... go with a nice mouse motor. You should be able to build a 350 for cheap. I know the bone stock 350 in my FJ40 does just fine for me. I wouldn't even consider dropping in one of my BB's.

Now that you don't want to put the BB in your Yota, sell me the BB... or trade it to me for one of my small blocks I have sitting here. :redneck: :haha: :D

Wonder if it's Ron's: Yota, 440bb, rearaxle yota/60 hybrid , frontaxle Land cruiser, 39.5 boggers, Radiator in BED, ETC.
If so the Rig was NASTY. It was a alright Crawler. It was a hell of a bogger and did AWSOME on the dunes with 33inch Paddles in the rear!

He just tore it apart to build a Land Cruiser.

I might end up going 350 for simplicity. I was looking at a firewall photo, and yeah, the brake vacaum would probably hit the valve covers. That along could be a big headache.

As to headers, I figured that they would have to be outside the frame in reality. They barely fit in a chevy frame as it is.

Seriously though, aside from running at 210, it always runs at 210 (at least water temp). Nonetheless, might not be worth the time. I could probably sell the engine, buy a doubler setup and maybe some other bits.

If I can get my hands on an FJ for the right price, I would most likely keep the BB for sure.
 
A local guy I saw put a BB in his Toyota, he was in a rush so I didn't chat horribly long but from what I remember, he moved the engine back 6-8 engines, didn't have much left in the way of fenders, cut his whole firewall out and was getting ready to make a new one, hell of a lot of work but it if its worth it to ya go for it :D
 
nope, there is no way to put a small lil ol 454:flipoff: in a toyota, just plan on running a radiator in the rear to help out on room. Hell do it just to be different, do not listen to the naysayers, and build what YOU want.

But Ron had VERY good points. At what point is it waisted power? Do you like to wheel far out for long hauls? gas becomes an issue/how much you have to burn.

But just build a roller SB350 and have plenty of poop.

You could always get a mini high output starter like the drag racers use. It's been a while since I've seen one but I think the main part of them are about the size of a pop can... and the solenoid is remote saving even more room.

Out of curiosity I measured my BB and my SB for reference...

The BB is "about" 34" from firewall to fan and "about" 24" wide NOT counting the headers.

The SB is "about" 32" from firewall to fan and "about" 21" wide NOT counting the exhaust manifolds.

The BB is "about" 13" tall from the frame to the top of the valve cover.

The SB is "about" 9.5" tall from the frame to the top of the valve cover.

This was in no way a scientific measurement and I didn't take into consideration different motor mount and fan possibilities. Both engines are in identical trucks with stock valve covers. The stock BB valve cover is much lower that most aftermarket valve covers. Consider that before spending $$$ on bling bling V-covers. :D
 
The started is int he same place on the block think about it... The same 153 and 168 tooth flywheels are offered for both.. how can the measurement change between engine platforms??


The guy I know that has the yota is a Kulp (sp) from hermiston OR. They have a machind shop down there...

Sorry about that...

I read the starter question as a general question: "I wonder if the starter would hit the frame?" My reply essentially was: if it did you could use a mini starter to gain some more room.

The measurements I took and posted were not intended to "go with" with the starter question. They were just overall measurements that I took since I was curious as to how much bigger the BB is over the SB.

Sorry I ran the two together and caused confusion.
 
Dangit... already have the bling valve covers ron! :)

What I really need to do is get the body I am going to use and do some side by side measurements.

As to the 350, do not most guys run a body lift for some reason with this engine? Not saying its a good idea, just asking.

It would make it much easier to acces the lower parts of the motor dont ya think? Kinda like in yer burban it made it easier to do the exhaust.
 
Well, I looked at the engine bay of the year(s) Toy I will eventually making into the boxxertoy.

"Toy" is a good description. It's friggin small! The width could work out ok with some work to the inner fenders, but the space between the front grill and the firewall is just an arms length.

Oh boy... rethinking project goals. Still thinking Toy, just deciding on gutting everything (including interior) cutting, more cutting and then some cutting vrs. smaller engine (maybe even stock V-6) with a handful of (comparitively cheap) transfer cases hanging out back.

On the other hand... it could be awefully fun to somehow make this work. Whatever... I have a garage to build first.

Engine bay i think is a just a bit less width than my jeep but the same length.

Like i said if you want me to build this 350 how you would like it just in case come on over and work out what parts you want and if you want it bored, could do a 383 stroker or somthing but ya let me know:Good:
 
I have a friend with a yota pickup, dont remember year. he SB'd it and 3/4 tonned it. The belt in front is about 1/2 an inch from hitting the grill. He used fence pipe for plumbing and has the rad in the bed with two e-fans. I'll get some pictures of it this weekend if you'd like.
