Is it okay to spend $250 on a ring? Think she'll still love me???!!!

Ha, I kid. :rolf: I am kicking around the idea of asking the ole lady if she'll go ahead and just put up with me forever. I'm interested to hear anyone's input on the matter, just to kinda see how different folks went about popping the question and picking out a ring.

I am struggling with deciding whether to pick out a ring myself and hope she likes it, or doing like some do nowadays and just discussing the issue of marriage, and going to a jeweler with her. I mean I know she is gonna be the one wearing it, so I want to be sure she likes it and maybe her picking it out would work better than what I would pick out? I don't think I really have an eye for stuff like that. BUT….I really don't want to lose the surprise factor. I'd like to catch her completely off guard and surprise her. The thing with letting her pick out the ring is then how do you propose beforehand with no fawking ring? Do those that go that route simply skip the climactic proposal and just go to the jewelry store together? Sure you can propose without a ring, but I feel like that would take away from the experience for her in that moment.

1.) I plan to visit a local and trusted jeweler to learn more, as I am completely new to this. Through brief research, I have already learned about the 4 C's of choosing diamonds.
2.) Should I buy ring and wedding bands as a package, or ring first, then us both pick out wedding bands?
3.) I hate wearing rings, so I am leaning toward that soft rubber wedding band like some on this forum have.
4.) Style? Diamond solitaire maybe with side stones; or one with several smaller stones clustered in a cool design?
5.) No clue what her ring size would be. We don't live together and I don't go to her house much, so I have no idea of her style jewelry as she doesn't wear too much, and can't swipe one of her rings for a size reference.

I'm leaning toward picking out the ring and a surprise proposal. I'd just hate to buy her something she doesn't really like, because I know she will act just as happy as ever to get it, regardless if she really likes it or not. Hell she may even be just as happy with whatever I get her anyways. She's not overly picky and doesn't value expensive stuff - she's pretty conservative, so I'm thinking I may fare a decent chance of picking something out she will like… Thoughts??

Never thought about it. But, in the 30 seconds of reading, I'll give you an off the wall opinion. Go buy the diamond you like and can afford. Have the jeweler put it in a simple ring. After you give it to her, tell her y'all have an appointment with the jeweler to pick out the setting/ring of her choice. That way, your budget stays intact and you give her the input also. Make sure you have an exchange on the ring and stone, just in case something different hits both your fancy on your return appt.

Now, for the Hardline response, you should rent, never buy *****. Get real man. Don't buy the cow when you can get the milk for free.

I did read where some have done a temporary ring and then went together and picked out the final one. That may be the route to go! I like that idea.

And my Hardline response to your Hardline response - Reckon she'll sign a prenup? :rolf: :rolf: :rolf:

That's right, is this ring for her hand or your nose? :flipoff1:

Buy one you can truly afford, probably about the same amount you got for the Red Baron? :driving:

learn young buck

An older, white haired man walked into a jewelry store one Friday evening with a beautiful young girl at his side. He told the jeweler he wanted a special ring for his girlfriend.

The jeweler looked through his stock and found a $5,000 ring. The old man said, "No, I'd like to see something much more special."

The jeweler went to his special stock in the safe and brought another ring back. "This one's $40,000." The young lady's eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man said, "I'll take it!"

The jeweler asked how payment would be made, and the old man said, "By check, but I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I'll write it now, and you can call the bank on Monday to verify funds. I'll pick up the ring on Monday afternoon."

Monday morning, the jeweler called the old man saying, "There's no money in that account!"

The old man said, "I know, but let me tell you about my weekend!"

Start small and with a reasonable budget. You can always upgrade later on in life if you make it that far. Not a dig, just the reality of 50% of marriages end in divorce. Why spend $8k on a ring and then get a divorce 2 years later. Spend 2-3k and upgrade later, or whatever you feel comfortable with. Some places will give you the 100% trade in for the life of your purchase. My wifes ring has one...if she decides she wants something different, we will go back and get something different without losing any money on the deal. As well, make an offer on her ring. If you pay full price, you have lost your mind. Sales are negotiable. Mention going to diamonds direct or I'll give xxx amount of dollars. I have saved a few hundred bucks with that method on purchases for my wife and daughters jewelry.

Good one Wyatt Lol I already heard that one.

Since I've pretty much just started studying all this, it's just confusing to me as to why one would upgrade later. That would no longer be the initial engagement ring with the centiment behind it then. Plus, I just don't see spending more money on bling like that....of course, she probably don't see spending $13k on a fawking Polaris either. :wtflol:

As of now, I don't want to spend more than maybe $3k-3,500 for all 3 rings. Anything more than that, to me, is just crazy. That whole 2-3 months salary is insane imo! You can do a lot with that extra money! Ppl blow $10k on a ring, then like a neighbor of mine did, throw a $30k wedding.....holy hell! Fawk no! Ya know what you could've bought with that $40k!? I just don't see things like that being materialized. Since Casie and I have been together, we have never not one single time bought each other a bday or holiday gift. Instead, we go out to eat somewhere nicer than normal or do something else special. I hate material gifts, she is kinda the same way, so I don't feel like she would ever need anything more than what I get her the first go-round....I hope. :rolf:

Funny story, a friend of mine bought his lady an $8k ring, he fawked her over, they divorced a couple years later, she literally went and threw that $8k ring in the fawking ocean!!!!!!!!! I mean damn, sell that bitch and keep the money, don't fawking throw it away! **** balls!

Bitchs is crazy, remember that ****! Remember it well.

I honestly don't remember what i paid for my wifes, but she has been more than happy with it. My daughter is going to be the jewelry hawk. She loves sparkly stuff and I am glad to spend some money on it. She's 4, so I do spoil her just a bit.

If you know her well enough, go with your gut.

I just know that any woman that won't be happy with $3k worth of a ring ain't the right one for me. :****: She's pretty low maintenance, so I highly doubt that will be an issue. Gonna try to get by the jeweler sometime this week to talk over some things.

I talked my wife into marrying me one night at Wesleys Booby trap after a few Colt 45's and a Roofie, and used a small diamond ring that was passed down for 5 generations. WIN WIN situation right there. Mo money fer fishing stuff. Tradition is that on your tenth wedding anniversary you upgrade the ring kind of like renewing your vows. It's just something done. If they are happy, then so you will be too. We are now 20 years later and happily buying buggy parts. Nuff said. :dblthumb:

If she dont wear much jewelry she will probably be cool with about whatever you get if it is not gold.

We went to a few places before I got my wife's ring although we had dated 9 years so it wasnt a big secret we would probably get married one day. I took good mental pictures of what styles she like and went and picked one out myself. Didnt buy a wedding band set,but last Christmas I got her 3 small bands that she wears with it after 8 years married.
I didnt want to be upgrading in a few years so I worked lots of long days and got what I wanted her to have and till this day she absolutely loves it. Also the value on diamonds go up and never loose value but I also buy stuff to keep not sell later down the road.
I shopped at all types of jewelry stores and found the best place was not the big name stores but the local owned and owner run.
In my situation I give about $6,000 for the ring and diamond(the $$$ part) but it appraised for almost $9,000.

They really were great to deal with and got her something different and worked out great. Of course, I could have had 5 custom built buggies for the same price. lol

Def will either be white gold or platinum, no 80's yellow gold bling lol. Probably white gold.

I seriously wasn't aware upgrading rings later was a thing! There's A LOT to this that I wasn't aware of!
