It's being force fed by the Federal government to the states....

Here is the federal guidlines for who needs a CDL.

Classes of License:

The Federal standard requires States to issue a CDL to drivers according to the following license classifications:

Class A -- Any combination of vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.

Class B -- Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR.

Some private organizations that are working to help sort this out.

I've read a bit on this, this morning. But **** they are coming after us, and anyone else trailered up.

A great lil read on some haulers take son this

I'm going to play dumb if I get pulled over with a buggy with race numbers on the side. "Yep just out recreational wheeling" , Guess I'll need to make sure I hide the trophy under the seat or something. It may help that my trailer and rig are light but that doesn't mean I still wont get hassled. What about all of you guys pulling big ass trailers and dually's and two rigs on a trailer......****

I wonder what "a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR" is. Where do they draw the line? It seems like I could put a tricycle on a trailer and it would qualify as a vehicle under 10k. What about an ATV? Where is the line between buggy and ATV drawn? Maybe it needs to be a registered vehicle?

What that means is, if you are driving a vehicle that weighs 26,001 or more and are towing a trailer, you must have a class B cdl. If the trailer weighs more or has a weight rating of more than 10,000, you must have a class A.

Basically if you drive a dually you are a target. Now how hard or where are you going to get targeted? No idea, but if you're seeing a lot of miles with a trailer, bet your ass you'll have your day.

Thanks, now I get it.

I tagged for 26k. My white dually was 16K. I'm always in that 20K range when I tow something. with 2 rigs, I'll be pushing on my 26K limit. that's just over tag. Wyatt, they are looking at vehicles tagged over 26,001K. then you have to have a cdl. If they want to be dickheads, they will license ticket you if you are over 26,001 and over tag/over bridge you. Honestly, its nothing to worry about as long as you aren't over gvcw with truck and trailer. no ****ing way you will be over, you are light as ****. I am not worried because I'm tagged for it. If I had tagged for more than I did, I would need a cdl. no need otherwise.

I bet the RV will be excluded. A huge lobby effort with a lot of money has always kept it off. I am at:

RV - 29,950
Trailer - 1,950
Purple Jeep - 5,300

That is 37,200 total!

Read into this more guys. If your GVWR is over 8k the Feds will be targeting you for not being tagged for more wieght ($$$'s), and for not having a CDL.
A stock 4wd crewcab dually weighs around that. You add a toolbox, or an aux fueltank, 5th wheel hookup, you're over 8k, and in their crosshairs. The Feds are saying these vehicles are only used for 1 thing, commerce, and we are avoiding paying taxes on that commerce by not having DOT#'s, tagged, or CDL's for the wieght.
Even further, I found even more discussion on them including any vehicle.

Now am I worried about them pulling me over to hassle, well probably not with an empty traile. But to and from comps with the buggy that is full on "Racecar" look, numbers on the side and sponsor stickers everywhere. They know I'm on the road for commerce, and if I blow the scales, then yeah I run that risk. You'll notice very few race trailers on the road with a single letter on them. What they cant see they cant get ticketed for.

All this **** confuses me, maybe somebody can brake down what all the GVW and GVR's mean and what we can do? I know they ask you at the DMV if you will be over 8k weight wise and want you to get a special tag for that, but that is all I know. I know my 3/4 truck weighs in at 7k or so, my trailer is 2500lb and rig is 4000lb. So does that mean by GVW is 13500lbs or am I missing something?

I'm reading some confusion here

you can get a class A or B liscense without gettting a CDL

i think it only applies to commercial vehicles. our tow rig and trailer w/race car was 32k and never had problems, but we had not for hire on the trailer and truck.

please re-read what I'm saying.
They are making regs applicable to us by considering us Commercial haulers, regardless of if we are being paid or not. If your hauling a car, tractor, cow, horse or hay they are considering you a for profit entity. You can fight this but in the end the odds are against you winning.
You will have to prove you are not a commercial hauler. They have made the regs to say every 1-ton on the road is commercial unless proven otherwise. To me thats says cause I have a penis, I'm a rapist until proven otherwise. Or cuase I own a gun, I'm a murderer until proven otherwise.
ESSSSS BULLLLSHIATTTT MAN!

I wonder if this does end up going through , will the sales of these 3/4 and 1ton trucks will go down. It sure as hell makes me not want to buy one now.

When you guys are saying you are "tagged" for it, what exactly do you mean?
You pay taxes on your registered towing capacity that you elect on your license plate. The higher the rating the more taxes.
10k, 12k, 16k, 24k etc. IIRC the break in Kansas for a farm truck was 16m, so I had a 16m farm tag on my slammed to the ground Chevy excab. Was kinda funny, but whatever, I was able to depreciate and write it off the farm.

Thanks for clearing that up Wyatt. I am not sure how it is in Mississippi. I know that the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks get a different tag with a designation. My old F250 had one, but they did not ask me anything about what or how much weight I would be towing.

Got a 2006 F250 today and will be going to get the tag tomorrow. I will report back what they say.
