Chasis or parts?

Re:

Have the parts or know the exact parts. If you know what parts and won't change your mind, then go for that chassis, but stick to a plan.

I'm convinced the way to go is buy Someone's ugly jeep/truggy with good parts at a steal. Then buy/build a chassis from it

This will be how I build my next one.

The parts to a chassis. I believe unless it is a chassis that has been made several times you will always have to compromise when parting all your parts on a pre made chassis. Even if using the same parts as another you may want to do some things diffenrtly. At some point you will compromise, either modify chassis or settle on a ride height, shock length, wheelbase, tire size, something which might not sound like a lot, but when your building your personal buggy you will be surprised how personal it becomes. Sometimes having to limit what you want around a prefabbed chassis sucks.

Or I could just be a ocd jackass who will not ever be satisfied with what I have. :dunno:

Either way get a plan and stick to it. Don't let us detour you from doing what you want.

I had the same dilemma when I built my rig. My wife encouraged me to buy all of the equip and build my own. Problem was, I can't bend a 17ft stick in my 1 car garage so I found a chassis already built. It was exactly what I wanted. I had all of my parts already from my previous donor rig.

Problems: Chassis was built to run an LS, front mount radiator and run a fuel cell behind the 2 front seats.

I have a 4.0 and the jeep powertrain so it didn't fit well. I had to cut and redo the tubing from the firewall forward.

My wife said I could only build a buggy if I could fit 2 children in the back. So I had to be VERY creative to fit all of this. I had to make a lot of changes.

I'm extremely happy with my rig but there are a million things I would have done differently. Though I would still not have bent my own. Primarily for the sake of time. It's possible I would have gotten burned out.

Lessons: I would have a chassis built for my powertrain and drivetrain and stick with that set up. Plan out what you want long term for your rig before the first piece is bent. While your chassis is being fabbed, hoard your parts.

Then shake n bake

I hear ya. I guess the only benefit to chasis first is keeping the motivation. Everything else points to parts. I've learned to accept that what i want to do may be different than what I should do. Although, i think they teach that in preschool. Lol. Guess I'm on the hunt for parts.

Honestly the chassis itself doesn't take that long to build. If you have your basics, the engine, trans, tcase, axles, seats, steering column/orbital, and wheels and tires, the chassis should only take you about 4-6 weeks working in the evenings. Then you hit the small tedious **** that you will encounter with a bought chassis. I find it relaxing to go the the garage and work on mine. Its good motivation for me to see it come together. I honestly work better alone too. Friends around are a huge distraction for me.

I love building things. I was mainly worried about not having much experience bending and rolling. I might still just build it myself, gotta learn somehow. Plus it'll save me a trip from pa down south where some of the best builders are. I'd like to compete in srrs at some point so I'll be making trips regardless, just with a built rig

Bingo!! We are a lot alike. I only have one maybe two buddies that I let hang around long because they will help and do not slow me down.. I have a couple of friends that I banned from coming over when Im in garage. Which is ALOT.. Knowing that you have something to wheel is a big differnce. I would probably buy the chassis or build one, I just think it would be badass to have a chassis sitting in the garage .. Like you said it would damn sure keep me motivated!!!

Im easily distracted!! My ADHD kicks in when people are around. It took a long time to learn to focus.

Re:

I thought having a chassis sitting in the garage would motivate me... Nope.

Too many other hobbies.

And the chassis I have is exactly what I want, and planned to build... Oh well

Figured I'd let you guys know what I decided. This particular chasis was built for a drivetrane I would have no problem running, wheelbase is good. It's got room for a pretty big fuel cell and tons of room inside. All in all, if I were to build one myself or commission someone else to build it, this is probably exactly what I would have wanted. Plus, now I know what parts I'll need to put it together. :woot:

Lol. See that chair behind the 2 engine mini bike? With enough finagling it fits through the "window" opening. :woot: :****:
