converted dana 44 brakes

I put the spindle on first, then the backing plate that holds the calipers.

I'm thinking this is your problem. And with it put together this way doesn't the hub housing rub the backing plate?

Shoulda just got some 6 lug rims :fawkdancesmiley:

I'm thinking you didn't read the rest of my repsonses. They only go together one way. spindle first, then backing plate. The spindle fits inside of the knuckle. I tore it apart last light and tried to swap ti around, ,,,,, No go at this station.

Sounds like your knuckle is different than my 79 waggy front, weird. In that case I have no further useful information.

well I shaved about 50 thousand's off of the pads and took the shims off. Now they fit on the drivers side, but thats the side I had more room. Tommarow I'll slap together the other side and see what happens.

I've *heard*, but not fully researched that there is either:

a) 2 different caliper brackets, with no rhyme or reason that are slightly differance.
and/or
b) there is like (1) year or so Ford hub/rotor combo (something like a '84, or maybe it was '86) that is different enough to not work.

I'm going completely off memory here, so don't quote me.

I've done this only a couple of times, and never had an issue. My current trail truck is running exactly that (narrowed Chev housing, flat-tops, small bearings and Ford hub/rotor). Bolted right together with no issue. The only time I ever did run into an issue was MANY years ago when doing a disc conversion on my first Scout D30. The recipe there was Scout (drum)knuckle, Scout (drum) spindle, Scout (disc) hub/rotor, Chevy brackets and calipers. I ended up having to beat/bend the brackets back to get it to all line up. I would never do that again, and that was before I knew better, but that set-up is still one I use and is currently under my race rig.

If you have a pull-a-part handy, try getting another hub/rotor set off a Bronco or F150. Or hit up the parts house and get one of the $35 combo specials and see if that works. If not you can always return it.

hmm, Parts America didn't show the combo for uber cheap anymore... not sure whats up with that. The cheapest I found was ~$75 for a complete hub/rotor/studs. Does look likes there's a year break at '86, then start back up at '88 to like 90-something... hummmm. Maybe a Ford guy can shed more light.
