Cooling System??????????

Aight guys, 195 Theromostat did not work. Gonna try a wide band O2 sensor to tell if it is running lean or not. Proly gonna be sometime next week though. I will update as soon as I can. :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

have you checked the radiator flues . I have seen 2 or3 ALU rads that the flues have swelled up and cut the air flow off due to bad caps or over heating. would run fine at idle but heat up under a load. easy thing to check and no cost! wont hurt to check.

Wayne, is that you???

Well...

I tried the infrared thermal heat gun thingy on the radiator hoses and header tubes and these are my findings based on the motor in question 454 and Coles 496 (8.1)

454 496
Water temp @ T-stat Around 168 Around 168
Water temp @ Water Pump intake Around 118 Around 120
Water temp @ Upper rad intake Around 143 Around 135
Water temp @ Lower rad outlet Around 90 Around 98

Header Tubes @ idle @ operating temp Between 515-520 Between 380-420

Coles varied so much because I checked it when the fan was running and when it was not. The 454 had the fan running all the time. From the research I just got I would have to believe that the motor is running too lean? Not sure if over the years that these motors have changed that much in the cooling ports or whatever in the heads and intake but I wouldn't think that they would be that different? What do you guys think?

One more thing, the water temp sensor for the water gauge is right between #3 & #5 exhaust ports on the head. I shot the fitting with the gun and it read 275 degrees. Do you think I should find a different place for it as well? Gauge only read 210 degrees.
