I listened to a podcast about the Slotin incident once. Apparently there is some speculation / disagreement over what really happened. Apparently Slotin was a show-off and had goofed with the screwdriver to scare people multiple times in the past. He would slowly slide it further and further out from underneath reflector until only the tip was barely underneath it, leaving the reflector just a fraction of a fraction of an inch away from falling and causing the core to react. Some of the survivors say this is what he was doing the day it fell. It cost him and most like others their lives life and made several people very ill.

It is crazy to me to think that they left such an important thing up to the role of a single flat head screw driver. I hope they at least had a Snap-On or other good brand. :)

Amputated the leg in under 21?2 minutes (the patient died afterwards in the ward from hospital gangrene; they usually did in those pre-Listerian days). He amputated in addition the fingers of his young assistant (who died afterwards in the ward from hospital gangrene). He also slashed through the coat tails of a distinguished surgical spectator, who was so terrified that the knife had pierced his vitals he dropped dead from fright.

That was the only operation in history with a 300 percent mortality.

I'm self employed, so when I get sucked in to a story like this (or any cool wiki) it takes money literally out of my pocket. That said, I'm a trivia nut and love reading and learning. This is the latest one that sucked me in. Good read on the atavist site. Took me a bit to read it all. The wiki is short and boring. The whole story is pretty damn entertaining

theres a podcast called 'stuff you should know' that I used to listen to when I had a 3hour a day commute round trip... they did an hour + on it. fascinating stuff.
