What do you think of this? I know I know, polishing a turd, but i'm really not wanting to have to go through the hassle of building up another axle and what not, I'm jsut kind of throwing the idea out there. Would it really be cheaper for me to sell of my dana 30 and get a driver's drop dana 44, it's going to be a while before either were to happen, but i would figure i'd get the opinion of some that have maybe done the conversion or just decided to go with a dana 44, i'd prefer going with a dana 44, but i'm not wanting to have to reset up another axle right now... anyways i think i know what the answer will, be but i need some motivation to push me in the right direction (dana 44:awesomework: )

edit:

just going through my head the cost of a dana 44 would be mo' better, for a $1000 i could get a lot of goodies for it... plus the money form selling off my shiny 30...

For the price of a hub conversion kit for the 30, you could buy a 60 and start putting it together.

ya, i didnt realize how much they were new, i figured if one did come by cheap i'd go for it, but i'm not really that interested in doing much more to it other than ball joints, to keep it safe.....er:redneck:

Is it the later style 30, with the ball joints pressed into the inner C's? If so, dump it, as far as I can tell. If it's the older style, you should be able to just toss 44 outers on and *hand waving* get some shafts cut and splined...? Pull-a-part...

ya, it's the style with the joints pressed into the housing, which brings me to another question... are those hard to replace??? cus i need to desperately have that done. i don't have the press to do it, and i really don't want to have to be charged for labor it'll take to disassemble the axle so someone can do it, unless it'd be relatively cheap...

You can buy a harbor freight press for less than $30 or rent one from Vatozone for $100. I usually use the press to pull both and install the bottom one. Then just beat the top one in with a BFH. :awesomework:

$100?? Maybe including the deposit... I rented one at Napa for more like $30, plus deposit...

i know this is a dumb question, but what kind/style of press? do i have to take the axle out from under the truck to do it? i'm trying to avoid that? and was wondering if you could use the press right there under the truck.

Yup, do it right there on the rig.

At Vatozone you give them a 100 deposit and you get all your money back when you return the tool.
If you think that makes AutoZone any less :rb:, you're sadly mistaken.

Actually I think that was the deal at Napa too, now that you say that.

Tool bag.
