So I have looked at what I can--but haven't found any info yet.

Anybody seen or know of a DIY tranny for the 24v second gen dodges?

I would love to just pull mine and drop it off someplace--but in all reality thats not going to happen and I am not going to "charge" it---$$ or nothing....

you mean like order the valve body, clutches, torque converter as a kit and put it in yourself? I dont see why not. Have you talked to DTT up in BC?

As far is know BD is the only company that sells performance tranny parts that can be installed in the back yard, and well BD is :puke:

DTT would be nice to deal with--but if you ever have a problem your kinda screwed. I had a buddy who had one of there tranny's. It had an intermintent issue only when towing. He took like 4 trips up there loaded--and they could never fix the problem.

But ya looking for a write up or any info on doing this yourself.

What about buying a new one from dodge? Steve was telling me on the fords they get better trannies for a lower price at the dealer

And still be stuck with a stock tranny? I will be in the same boat again. I want one thats going to hold up to some power and towing....

IDK on the dodges but Evergreen Steve has put alot of miles on powerstrokes and said the stock ones were better than a rebuild/built tranny. Odie said the same thing to when I was talkin to him.

I honestly have no clue, just what those guys had told me. Might just be a ford thing too.

How many miles on yours crash?
Did it go out completly or are you upgrading just cuz?
Is it the same tranny as my 98 12v?

Im learnin this **** as fast as I can:redneck:

Mike if you get the parts it's not hard to tear down and reinstall, Ben and I did it a couple times and that tranny is holding near 950-1000hp. If you want I can see what prices I can get for you on BD parts... I know they are not Suncoast, but if you're not racing or pulling they will be just fine.

The weak link on the 2nd gen dodges is the auto tranny. I have mine protected from heat and I have every bolt on (exterior) part I could get for it that BD makes--and thats helped. It still works but if I am on it hard I can slip it going into gears--and thats with a device that bumps up the throttle/line pressures.

As for ford trannys--could not tell ya but your comparing apples to oranges.

I have like 135,000 on it

I can easily limp it along--but I want to wheel other places than reiter with the camper--and right now I can't trust it to pull any distance.

Ya--you have the same trans as I do....

If you get a chance patric---dig me up some numbers :awesomework:

whats wrong with them?

Just about all of them are like what crash already posted... They do weird things at only certain times, and can take a lot of tuning to get them to work just right, and that's not something you can do in your backyard. Besides most of the tuning is in their electronics, and you have to know what your doing or know someone in the business... If you get the full meal deal, their excellent trannys and can take a lot of power, but for what crash want's i wouldn't get one...

a BD tranny holding 950-1000 HP... Are you rebuilding it ever week and half?

a 1000 hp dodge with a backyard tranny install? oh boy.. :corn:

I wouldn't go with BD... their stuff has gone down the toilet in the last 3 or 4 years.. I haven't kept up on DTT, their following somehow got smaller and smaller as the market got bigger. You can try Dunrite.. Call up Rip at Source and see what kind of parts he can give you. Not sure how cheap you wanna go.. Any decent converter will run you 1k plus some change.. Last I knew, built trannys installed ran in the low 3k range..

Ford trannys are totally different then the Dodges.

Ya I am pretty ready to spend $1k on a converter--no way around that one. Like I say I would love to just drop it off and have it done---but I just aint got the $$$ sitting right now so I am looking at the options to do it myself with the hard parts....

the only shitty part is the tuning.. Somehow these trannys thrive on having the tranny setup just right, and for a certain amount of hp.. If you don't, you will have nothing but problems.

shiftworks in marysville.

you can buy parts from suncoast, etc he'll make recomendations on what ya need, then install whatever you bring in...

My opinion----IF you're gonna spend 1K on a converter, and do the rest your self....what if something happens to what YOU did, and the converter gets filled with crap, or worse....you just blew 1K...and get to buy another 1K converter....
Just pull the trans yourself and have someone reputable build the tranny...Also, flush or replace the cooler/lines ( I think there's an updated/larger cooler for these...)...I can recommend a couple local builders up here if you'd like mike...Been really happy with either one for work done in the recent past...!!!
