DIY rim locks

be careful tightening the outer rings on as you have a large gap between where you welded the crush ring and the tire bead, you will actually fold in the outer rings.. I made that mistake with the same set of DIY's. If I was to do it again I would weld the crush rings you made closer to the bolt holes

now I am going to dish the ring out instead of coning it... great  :haha:

Yeah I am hoping I will still have a bit of a gap between the collar and the inner ring so it won't be all that bad.

that is what I am getting ready to do... I have 2 sets of 5 rings I just got back from the steel cutters...

Now I just have to punch in the holes and weld them up...

can't wait to set them up...

Good Job by the way:awesomework:

it only cost me about $250 bucks to have 10 ringsets cut out, the rest will just be all my time to finish them off... and it gives me an excuse to try out the new steel punch for the holes:cheer:

Any reason you didn't buy pre-cut rings? I understand playing with a new tool, but I was happy when I bought my rings for $175 shipped.

any tips to help get them mounted tires mounted?

Like everyone says use a bucket.

Put the rim on the bucket then roll the tire on... I have been mounting motorcycle tires for years so I have collected my share of tire irons so putting first edge on the rim seemed easy... we will see how the other three go.

I will probably be home tonight around 5 which is way early for me so I hope to get a jump on them tonight.

well, I wanted to make them, just for the fun of it... since I have done everything else on my rigs.

and I wanted to lock the spare as well.. so that is 5 rings vs. the 4 that they sell in the kits...

so for my price of $250 I am getting enough to do 10 wheels, for 2 complete sets.

it should only take me about an hour or two to punch the holes, then about another hour to put on the anti-cone ring.

just something I had to try.. just like I make my own rock guard for my d44s..

I have a guy that cuts out all the rings for me, punches the holes, then I just weld on the cages... it is kind of fun:D

I have even entertained the idea of selling the items, just cause it doesn't break the bank to make em...

the nice part was that when I ordered the steel, I supplied them with a tech drawing so I could get them cut out, and since I didn't want them to punch any of the holes all I had to do was pay for weight plus like a couple hours of shop time...

but if all else fails and I decide not to make them to sell.. at least I will have mine all done up. :D
