Dodge guys--talk to me

Mike,
Like I told you in the other thread, I have the Edge Juice w/Attitude sitting on the floor next to my chair waiting for me to install it. I also just ordered this http://www.vulcanperformance.com/servlet/the-74/Vulcan-Pusher-Pump-System™/Detail to solve the lift pump issue.

I looked at adding gauges myself and if you price out some nice ones plus the pods your at around $400. The edge has a pyro, fuel pressue, tranny temp, & a turbo cool down mode. Made the choice real easy for me. I can point you to someone who can get you the Edge for around $625. I'll let you know in a week how I like the stuff on my truck.

I took off from Vantage this weekend heading up the hill towing my boat and got my truck hot for the first time.

Considering the thermostat in that diesel is 190, I wouldn't be concerned over a 210 temp, especially while towing.

Ok so I am very mechanically inclined but I don't know the cummins(24v) or its "characteristics"..

I'll start with the engine temps. NBow I know it was blooody hot this weekend but I would not have thought the motor would have gotten as hot as it did... On flat ground towing the temp guage stays around 210. and when pulling passes it would get to what looks like 225ish. Is this normal? I really think its running hotr but not positive.

Now at the dealership they installed some new lift pump--anybody know about any factory upgrades for the lift pump?

What grade were you towing at? HOw much weight

As for the lift pump.. Grin and bear it. No upgrades, but you can prolong the life of the pump. Get a FASS system. That is a Fuel Air Seperating System... The biggest downfal of the Injection pump is air in the system. If you can prevent that air from enetering your injection pump, You should be good. Another big cause of a failed Injection pump is a Bad Line pump. If the line pump goes out, then the injection pump acts as a puller, instead of a pusher. There is a warning lite you can get from piers diesel (I think). That warns you when the line pump is going out. That is a $100 fix VS a $1500 fix for the injection poump. I used ot keep a spare int he truck for this reason alone.

OK, I read a few more posts... Here is what I can recommend.

Get a PYRO gauge....NOW!!!!! The worst thing you can do is get your exhaust too hot. This will roast the turbo QUICK!!!!

As for a tranny... Yours is starting to go. Save your duckets because they are not cheap. I did not go with a big name brand tranny. I had a buddy build mine. He overbuiltthe hell out of it. I was pushing over 350 hors to it, and it would take at least another 200 before Iwould have problems. I twas WAY less than the brand name ones too.

As for the lift pump, get a Carter pump. Cheap and easy fix.

Does this info apply to second gens also?

Wahooo!!!!
Got my Edge Juice w/Attitude installed along with the lift pump relocation kit & new pump. At idle I am sitting at 16PSI fuel pressure.

Like I said Mike I'll let you know what I think about this whole setup on Tuesday cause I am going on a little road trip this weekend.

Crash,
Well I can say I am MORE THAN HAPPY with the Edge Juice. I was getting 16.8 mpg combined before I did the chip. I did about 600 miles this weeknd and my MPG is up to 20.8 now. This was on power level 1 and today on the way to work I upped it to power lever 3. Wow that was fun!!
And I had a shudder issue when hitting WOT that I thought might be the tranny starting to go. But since installing the Vulcan big line kit with the replacement pump it is gone which would tell me that my lift pump was going bad.
So the short and simple is that I am more than happy with the mods I did.

So for the people with the programmers...

I have read that because of high EGTs you dont want to tow with it set up above level 1 or 2 with the edge system, is this really true?

That's what the pyrometer is for, so you know when it's too hot. :;

My only problem with the edge jiuce is how it interfaces with the engine controler. I have heard problems with the engine controler software becoming corrupted.

Well I have heard for the Juice going bad but that is the only issues I have heard of. I guess we will have to find out on my rig.

Mike, glad to see your dieseling! Its fun! As far as melting pistons go, its not gonna happen with the stock fuel and computer settings. I'm sure somebody has but your camper and toy arent that heavy. watch the fuel pressure like a hawk. There is a little dealy(for lack of a better term) Below the injector pump where you can hook up a test gauge. If you want to periodically check on it till you get gauges, thats the way to do it. Its a screw on type thing.

For over heating, Is your coolant and water new? Mine used to NEVER get hot even on our trips to nevada, but slowly it has started getting warmer and warmer. Several people have suggested a coolant flush and re-fill. I'm gonna give it a shot.

I was running a drop in K&N filter but took it out cuz I was sucking the gauze right out of it! I also have a 4" exahust. With both of those I was getting 19mpg. I switched back to a paper element from napa and it dropped to 17.5mpg. I run synthetic oil too. My temps dropped by about 20* (while towing)and I picked a mpg or 2 back up. I want to put an AFE intake on still.

Oh yeah, 02 HO2500 4x4 6spd.

I see that most of you are runnin or lookin at EDGE products, but what about Banks?

I have an 2005 CTD 3500 Dodge 4X4 DRW. I put the Banks system on because of it being complete and not just a "programer" type. I have nothing but good to say.....Lets just say that pullin the trailer was nothing at all before, but now this thing hauls AAAZZZZZ. I also don't have any problems heating up or have any concerns over "detuning" because of haulin the heavy trailer. I have pulled on highest level power and hauled butt. Only real benefit for using lower levels is fuel milage.

IMHO I don't like to get mine over 215-220*. I have spoke with quite a few cummins experts and they say up to 220 is ok but I bought my truck to run many trouble free miles and I start getting out of the throttle by 215*. The FASS fuel pump kit is the only way to fix the problem for the 2nd gen. trucks. Iff the price seems to high I would start with a fuel pressure gauge and if it starts having low fuel pressure problems Don't drive it, it will ruin the VP44 injection pump.

If you are interested in a torque converter lock up kit, you can put a manual switch (by grounding the circuit) and breaking into a wire on your harness and manually locking the torque converter. ( a must when towing heavy).

As for the edge Juice having a low fuel pressure warning, I don't believe it does for your year of truck (I check it out). If you aren't into racing I think the juice i overkill and will kill you trans on the high settings. I would just get an Edge EZ and manual gauges.

The Edge Juice is for 98.5 to 2002 trucks. They make it for other years also but this is the Gen II trucks w/24 valve. I have mine setup to with the fuel pressure displayed. Since I put the Vulcon big line kit & relocation kit on my pressure has never gotten below 12psi. Not I haven't towed anything yet either. But driving it back and forth to YTC everyday I am pulling in 20.8MPG.

Are you hand calculating or reading the overhead display for your milage? Did you have to buy a sensor or did your attitude display come with a sensor for fuel pressure?(assuming you have the Attitude, the juice is only the fueling/timing box)
