Noob here and not really very knowledgeable in rebuilding rigs. But I'm gonna try none the less. This 1972 Blazer was my Granfather's then my Dad's and now mine. It has been sitting from 10-15 years. My dad was never and mechanical guy and never tried to get it going again. One day it blew power steering fluid everywhere and got all over the belts and wouldn't start. He was late for work, so got a ride then it end up covered in our driveway for a couple years. Then moved to a garage until I told him finally I'm taking it and getting it running.

As far as he knows it's a rebuilt 350 with low miles. But not sure on the exact mileage. The gas tank has been pulled by me years ago when it had a crack and I was a dumb kid and didn't know what I was doing. The carb is MIA, an I already have a new steering box for the leaky one on there.

I drained the oil and replaced it. It was black but nothing bad coming out if there.

So, so it begins, as they say. I'm looking forward to hopefully getting some advice and help along the way from you fellers. Anyway sorry the for the long post, but here she is with the top pulled on jack stands:

Forgot to add that I switched out the battery cables and got a new battery. I plan on getting a new distributor. A buddy told me to spray WD in the cylinders and just crank her over and few times to lube up the walls.

Any other suggestions on cleaning or making sure the cylinders are clean and lubed?

Put a little bit of marvels mystery oil in each cylinder and crank it over by hand with a breaker bar on the crank bolt. Get a set of fel pro silicone one piece gaskets for the valve covers and oil pan the old cork gaskets are wasted by now so just get the messy stuff out of the way now.

Nice rig, if you need any help I'm local :D

Nice chev!:awesomework:

My grandma has a 72 chev 3/4 ton longbox that I hope to get one day. I love the front grills on that year of rigs.

nice rig...i got a 69 long box 1 tons 8 inch lift 35s.4 speed .love it

Can I get that oil anywhere? I assume I'll have to pull the radiator to do that? Should probably clean that sucker out to. Thanks for the tips.

Nice. I agree, I love the look of this beast!:D

Any parts store will have marvel on the shelf, NO you don't have to touch the radiator. Pull the spark plugs and put some oil in each cylinder. Leave the plugs out and turn it over by hand. The radiator will probably be fine as long as it had a good mixture of antifreeze in it.

Wow, nice selection of parts. I think I know where I'm ordering stuff from now.:D

Classic heart beat is the place to buy parts for that rig. Check out 67-72chevytrucks.com for more info on that beast

Dont be afraid to call with questions too, he knows everything little thing about those rigs. :awesomework:

Good to know thanks.

Today I got the plugs pulled and shot some of that Marvel Mystery Oil in the top if the cylinder as recommended. Then manually cranked her over, and she cranked over pretty dang easy. I also flushed the radiator and block with a hose. Thermostat looked fricken nasty. No rust in the fluid though.

I also got to tearing into the exhaust. The old stuff is worthless so I'm ripping er out. I was gonna Leave the manifolds on for now but after working my ass off trying to get the passenger side off, half the manifold came with it!!! I was gonna put headers on anyway but dang, I didn't expect it to just fall apart like that. The drivers side was still solid. That's it so far.

Thanks for the tips, more are welcome.

Those factory mainfolds usually break the bottom collector piece off mainly because they are so old(they can only heat up and cool down so mainy times before the are fatigued and brittle). I would suggest getting stock corvette manifolds for it, they have the bigger collector so you get more flow and you wont have an issue blowing out exhuast gaskets all the time. I went through 3 sets of headers on my 68 trying to find a good set and in the end rand the corvette manifolds and loved them. My dad can give you a part number or year range as I dont remmeber off the top of my head what year they were. Headers are a headache and IMO what is gained is not worth the hassle:awesomework:

didn't they go to disk brake front in 73?
hmm.. somebody did a swap or am i just wrong?

I was wondering the same thing, but I'm sure this is stock.

Hmmm corvette manifolds huh? Would headers be cheaper? I'm trying to go cheap at first so the wife doesn't murder me.

Those manifolds are gold and hard to find.

Just get sum good headers and weld the collectors up so they dont need gaskets at the collector.

Ive got a 67 chev on rockwells and 53s that ive had for about 15 years. Also had a 69 blazer with a 67 front clip too.

I know a bit about these trucks.:D

let me know if ya need any parts for it. I even have a set of headers and 3 inch exhaust with flowemasters for it too.

I have tons of parts for chev trucks.

The NOS manifolds are expensive but the do reproduce them and they are competetive with headers. Welding your headers at the collectors will fix that gasket area but sucks when you need to work on it and you have to cut/reweld them every time and you still have the problem of cheaper headers with thin flanges warping at the head and blowing that gasket out and if you weld the collector it makes it a pain in the ass to change that one. I have owned tons of these trucks and worked on tons of them at my dads shop and in the end I am always putting on a stock cast iron manifold. Just trying to save you some headache:beer:

I guess the question is are you building this to be a nice classic to drive/ wheel or are you build a dedicated wheeler?
