FNG 72 K5 Blazer CST Project

You definetly scored on that rig. I am assuming it has a factory tach and tilt aswell as the A/C? That thing is worth worth a ton of coin all fixed up:awesomework: I would also start a build thread on the 67-72chevytrucks site or my dads website. Those guys live a breathe these things and would be dropoling all over yours as it is rare. They could also be a good source for used parts to help with your budget:awesomework:

Not to bad back here.

if you are going to wait to fix the rust I would spray a rust inhibitor on it to stop it from spreading:awesomework:

wd40 evaporates, hit it with a coat of oil or atf for a quick stop to the rust. Although this time of year it won't keep rusting in the oven that is the columbia basin. :haha:

Best bang for the buck is to get hooker block huggers from summit. They come from their supercomp line and are top notch at a cheap price. You can also get a dual exhaust that is high quality from them for under $200 complete with hangers and mufflers.

I think front discs were standard after 71 so they are stock. :D

Everything on this rig is factory, although I don't think it has the tilt. The signal knob is all sloppy and busted, and the original steering wheel is all dry rotted and will have to be replaced. So a little work is needed there as well.

Would that marvel mystery oil work? ATF? Gotta link for those headers?

Thanks for the help again.

I put WD on it for now will that work? And my garage is about 120 degrees during the day right now.

Your probably fine like WT for now with the weather the way it is but before winter pick up some por 15 for it. It inhibits the rust and you can paint over it later if you dont replace that area. Stay away from petroleum products they will get dow in the cracks and pours making it hard to get off and will screw it up later for paint.:awesomework:

Headers, exhaust. That is your best bang for the buck bar none. No local exhaust shop will touch the rig for under $300 and I haven't been impressed with ANY of them.

The rocker rust is pretty common to those blazers. I've seen cherry rigs with no touch of rust anywhere but the rockers are missing in action.

Here are reproduction corvette style manifolds for $60 a piece cut the little horn off with a swazall or cut off wheel and your in buisness and you wont be burning up your spark plug wires and boots either. You can use the exhaust kit that WT listed as well and you would be just over 300 into a good flowing exhaust that wont have gasket issues.

Those manifolds aren't bad at all but the reason I recommend the headers I do is because they are from the super comp line so they are not cheap leaky thin flanged crap that 95% of them on the market are.

The copper header gaskets are decent but I've had MUCH better luck with the thick dead soft aluminum ones.

I have always had problems with headers in general burnin plug boots, wires and gaskets. The last set I had were sandersons corvette block huggers and the boots would touch the header in spots and they were expensive ones and they even burnt through my "space aged" taylor boot protectors. I am sure either way he'll be happier than he is now with a broke manifold:awesomework:

I cannot believe i missed this thread until today, i dont get on that much anymore but I have to say tht is a beautiful rig. I grew up in blazers.
my dad had one my brother and 2 of my uncles all had blasers and not i have been through ten or so myself with different things done to each one and then move on to the next, I would love to get a72 cst just like that because that is what my dad and one of my uncles had as well but one was orange.

sweet rig and good luck with the build.
Ias stated I dont get on here much but I have a ton of blazer experience if you need it. there are other local boards also with k5 minded people there.

Just finished pulling the passenger side manifold. I had to move this, I don't know what it is. AC unit??

Tried throwing in a working steering box but no dice. Looks like where the pitman arm connects it's different than my original. Looked at the "new" one that I got off of craigslist in ellensburg, and it says 71 chev right on the dang thing!!

Any ideas? Looks like I just need a nut to go on the new pitman connection or should I get a new arm all together? Or does it even matter? Like I said I'm a noob.

I have no doubt that steering box is a 71, but its for a 71 2 wheel drive... Now would be a great time to do crossover steering but I doubt you'll take this build far enough to warrant it. But on the bright side the correct steering box is very easy to find locally.

I'm not bashing you in the slightest but you truly have no clue what you're doing do you? Good on ya for seeking out help when you knew you were in over your head. :D I'll be around all weekend starting friday am if you need help with anything or just immoral support.

Haha no bashing taken. Thats why it says FNG in my title lol. And no I don't have any idea what I'm doing. I have a few buddies that do though, but thanks for the offer I might take you up on it later. The reason I jumped on the steering box so fast was that it only cost me $50.

How expensive would it be to do cross over steering? I want to learn, so the more the better. The only thing that will hold me back is the coin. Thanks again.

No progress as of yet due to funds. Anyway, I'm going to start looking around for a carburetor, what do you guys recommend? I want to stick close to stock which I have no idea what that is. This is just to get it running, nothing fancy or anything. I'll most likely be cruising craigslist when I get the funds.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.
