Too bad he didn't leave an address where we could find him or summat, that's one mofo I'd like to mess up good.

Back to the topic at hand...
I would recommend not selecting a cherokee for your first wheeler.
Any Cj/wrangler type jeep is a good place to start.
My advice though would be to start with a solid axle toyota, I wish I started there simply because you can run bigger tires for cheaper (think Longfields).
As far width goes its a matter of personal preference and finding what works, but it seems like around 62-64" wms-wms works well for a lot of rigs. Width (and wheelbase also) are always a tradeoff, sometimes being small helps and sometimes bigger is better.

gawd....a guy voices his opinion and gets banned....WTF?:corn: ...ohh wait i forgot...its all about the pacific northwest JEEP association in washington state.....:puke: anybody that doesnt "fit" pretty much gets **** on:awesomework: IMHO

Wow, that all went horribly wrong pretty quickly.

I know that guy got a little out of hand at the end there, but are we really to the point where we are hopping out of our rigs to put band-aids on the "boo-boos" on trees?

I'm all for "tread lightly" where possible, but really, the northwest is hardly the kind of terrain where this works all the time. Its pretty easy to not tear up a bunch of rock in AZ. Meanwhile, around here you can tear up a huge mudhole, go away for two weeks in the spring, and have a jungle growing there. I'm NOT saying you should...

I guess my point is that folk shouldn't get holier-than-thou over track width. C'mon we've all scraped a little bark here and there, and its hard to accurately judge a person's wheeling habits by a forum post. That whole thing was a little too PBB-drama-style to me.:stirpot: :corn:

It's not about whether or not width causes someone to scrape a little, we all do that, we all dig holes etc. It's about the "I don't give a crap about what's right or wrong, I'm going to do it anyway - attitude" that is the problem.

This has been beaten to death in other thread but EVERYONE has to realize that doing things like blazing a trail through the woods and wheeling the crap out of it - without anybody caring, simply isn't reality and if people like him continue to have that type of attitide it WILL kill our sport.

That's what I'm taking issue with, not whether or not someone drives a full size or not.

What PNW Jeep assoc are you talking about? I see no rules in the PNW that say only Jeeps are allowed. Plus I know there are other rigs than Jeeps in the PNW4WDA. This still goes back to the fact that the guy was being a TOTAL ASS. If we want to keep our trails open for our kids and their kids then then we have to start being responsible. And part of that is to limit the amount of damage we do to the trails we have.

Next issue is what gets debated all the time. How wide is too wide? Depends on which trails you want to run. If you want to be able to wheel all the available trails in the PNW then you need to build your rig to FIT THE TRAILS. If we keep building out rigs with the intent to make the trails fit our rigs we are going to be in trouble.

So to answer the OP question. I would not put full width axles under your CJ. I have a narrowed Ford HP44 axle in the front of my TJ. I would agree that a WMS of around 61-64" is about right. Any wider and your going to have problems. Again this is just a personal opinion.

For the record, the person that bans people doesn't own a Jeep, plus the guy obviously has no regard for the four wheel drive community, it is people like him that get our trails closed, like it or not, we have to follow the rules.

ok the more i read here, pirate, marlin, and yotatech i am heavilt leaning towards a 85 yota. also how would 33 boggers do on the trails. i just picked up a free set with like 50 or 60% tread from behind renton IGA

My god--I am getting **** for this---and from you leadfoot---you know me better than that--I do not pull that **** for somebody's opinions--but when somebody starts spouting like he did and getting pm's from him--he goes away....

jeesh:rolleyes:

ok back on topic i ran a TJ with a 60 and 14 bolt with 44's through Elbe and Evans i was 87" wide and knowbody ever gave me greif about width or anything i met up with alot of people that i enjoyed wheeling with and they seemed to enjoy wheeling with me, I never felt to wide at any of the trails (it was tight in some spots and it took some finesse) and knowone excluded me.
IMHO it all has to do with a persons attitude and temperment if your an ass your just an ass doenst matter what rig your in, its just if you have a rig that is sick or a little different from the norm that people remember and your an ass people will talk and not want to wheel with that rig or person

in reference to : mentally challenged... i mean "Mechanically"(whatever)I see he was from Bellingham? we went wheeling with the Rainier Ridge Rams at a really cool place up there but now it is closed because of asshats like this local yokle. yup, wheel the piss out of what you want till you can't no more... great job.
