This gofundme stuff: where did it come from? How do folks sleep at night after asking random people for money? I know we had that one goon on here that was asking for "tire money" for his jeep. Arkantard. But I have seen various other requests circulated in other circles. Why?
This came to mind because I was talking with a friend of mine today about uniform items that we have to buy. I have to drop almost $3,000 on uniform items this weekend and it is definitely going to hurt my soul a little. I'll miss a few things I want to do, but I'll survive. It's part of the game. When I asked if he had purchased his sword yet, he said no and asked if he should. I informed him that it is a "required item" and that they are just shy of a grand.
He told me that one of the guys in his training class started a gofundme for it. This kid was a ROTC scholarship so he didn't pay for college. I have no idea what his financial background is, but I know that there are career starter loans available specifically for this and they have really great interest rates. Instead of taking responsibility for his future, this kid starts a gofundme to ask people to pay for his crap.
Is it absurdly expensive? You better believe it. Do we sacrifice a lot? Damn skippy (not that he knows anything about that yet). Do I expect someone else to buy my uniforms? Nope. But heck, maybe I am doing it wrong. Maybe I should whine and cry about it and start a gofundme account for my uniforms. I mean, if I don't have to buy new fancy pants for work with my own money, I can put a new set of shoes on my truck.
Rant over.
