Good Combo?

If there's a will there's a way, besides, he's putting a motor in it to which means the whole assembly can be moved forward to compensate.
I doubt it, in a flatty, without moving the grill forward, extending the front frame, etc. He could also scoot the rear axle way back. So, you're right, but I don't sense that that's the magnitude of project he's looking for here.

I'm not sure, for a 300. For a Dana 20 I'd say a T18 or SM465, because they are SHORT and so are the adapters.

You'll have to research it. There is good into at www.novak-adapt.com. Shop by tranny length and adapter length.

OK fine I want and looked :haha:, looks like the NP435 wins at 13.9" combine tranny and adapter length. That's about an inch longer than my T18/Dana20 combo. Not bad.

Looks like Novak has been working on their stuff. I'm pretty sure their adapters were longer than that a couple years ago.

after school today i will go to their site and do a little research:awesomework:

Box it, don't just plate it.

its already boxed but then has huge hole's drilled on the inside possibly to cut down on weight, im thinking of cutting out the inner part with the holes drilled and replace it with a solid peace of metal

moving it forward is ou of the question i will be tight on space already because its a longer motor and bigger radiator and there is no more frame up front i would ahve to make the frame larger. if i move the axle back i would have to do a comp cut to make the tires fit at this point im thinking the same wheel base would be cool if i can pull it off

Starting to figure out a flatty may not be the best platform for a hardcore trail rig?

My advice would be to "modify" it moderately, retain it's old school cool factor, wheel it within it's capabilities, and know that a different platform is in order for what you claim to want to achieve. If you wheel it like you claim to want to, it will be a bent and twisted pile of **** within a month anyway. Where's the uniqueness in that? Who wants to see a once cool old flatty that was dragged though BYS one too many times?

I'm not sure how a flattie compares lengthwise to a CJ5 but I'm running an LT1, TH350 and D300 with Dana 44 front/Dana 60 rear and 38" tires. Drive to and from the trail head with no problems and it's done great so far on the trails. Yes the rear driveshaft is rather short but with the CV and the rear pinion tilted up rather steep, no problems. Oh, and this is also a SOA + 2.5" via lift springs

i see your point, so you want to lend me some money then? lol:fawkdancesmiley:

just kidding, somebody want to help me pull a transfer case for a jeep in hips yard sunday????:D

On the frame topic.....Check into DJ frames(postal) you'll find they make a damn good starting point for rather cheap on a flattie. Already 3/4 of the way boxed and very, very similar in length and overall measurements. And better steel to start with....

Crusty, I have an NP435/D18 combo in my 289 powered flattie with a novak adaptor. The 18 and 20 adaptors are still longer than the 300 adaptor it looks like. Mine is about 3 or 4 years old and looks the same as the one they have advertised now. They may have changed the 300 adaptor though since I hadn't looked at it before and it is definitely shorter than the 18/20 adaptor..

T18 is the way to go for a D-18 or D-20 case. Good tranny, short ass adapters, about an inch.
