Got a talkin to by "the man" for illegal wheeling today.

We were up wheeling Denny Creek in the snow. At the top we were fooling around on the big pile of snow that the plows stack up. We were driving on it and over it and around it, just making new lines and having a good time.

Anywho, a USFS Leo stopped me (he was on foot and walked over to me) and told me that I was breaking the law by driving in the drainage ditch. I did not know that I was doing anything wrong. We were on snow 100% of the time never even in danger of digging down to dirt.

I stopped what I was doing, and got back on the snow over the paved road. After talking to him, he said that we could do whatever we wanted as long as we were over the paved road. Driving in the ditches or up the side of the hill, even though you are on the snow, is illegal.

Just educating folks so you don't get in trouble.

just curious if he sited a regulation that he was referencing. Not to say he's full of BS, just to it can be verified.


Seems a little pick/anal for just playing on a snow berm.

I didn't argue with him, I just complied with his wishes.

I also thought it was ridiculous. If I were in the mud tearing **** up, or driving up the side of the hill in the mud, (which I would not do), I would expect a ticket. But driving on 8 feet of snow? :booo:
 
The issue with driving on snow, off trail is that others may follow your tracks as the snow melts. Eventually someone will follow the tracks and be in dirt.........

I still think it was bullshit. Snow melts.

What binder's talking about is exactly what's happened to an undisclosed local alpine meadow.

As quoted to me by a DNR/Forest Ranger years ago:
During the snow people would drive out into the "clearing" (which is an alpine meadow, meaning everything grows twice as slow) and then as the snow started to melt people would still go out into the meadow to cut cookies and dig to dirt and tear up the meadow, not realizing it was a meadow.

It's been a issue with the wheelers following snomobile tracks too but not that big of a issue. It's only a issue for that one week when wheeling first opens after sled season. Usually the sled tracks are melted off or snowed over by then.

Snowmobiles should have to stay on the trail just like everyone else...

I would say that the most logical point:Dto take from this thread is that Denny Creek is not the best place to accommodate the typical wheelers tendances.......screwing around on stuff on or nearby the "trail". And that unlike other popular snow wheeling roads/sites, Denny Creek is popular with a variety of motorized and non-motorized activities. This higher activity rate make it necessary to have a greater enforcement presence. What I'm getting at is; what happened to Karl should have happened. It was designed to happen that way.

I see this as an example of the system working. Isn't that what we're all crying for? I know I am.:awesomework:

I agree... I was just saying that I believe that the snowmobiles should have to stay on the trials...
