Here is a little update. Got the rear finished up and did a little clearance checking with the suspension. Very happy with 10" of up and 9" down. Will have to run a mid shaft bearing for the rear though.

It is hard to beat the off idle torque of these motors. The old buggy I had came with the 500 and that is how we got started into these motors. Downfall of course is the rev limit is quite low for mine 5500 rpm....I think the blown motor will be at 6000 or 6500

I was reading up on the 500 Caddies. They started out at 400 hp / 525 ft/lbs and by the end pf production in 1976 they had them down to 190 hp / 360 ft/lbs. Talk about disappointing!

So if you get one of the later models do you modify them to get back to 400? Or do you just hold out for the mythical 1970 unicorn? There was only one year at 400, they immediately started taking them down.

We checked and this one is a 1970 :woot:

Keep in mind that around this time ('71), feds mandated the change from "gross HP" (no acc. @ flywheel) to "net HP" (realistic) ratings, along with a crap ton of other "fuel saving" BS.

Compression was reduced from 10.5 to 8.5 so I'm sure there was a good bit of power lost as a result of that. Either way, interesting reading material to me.

Are there stroker cranks and stuff for the 500's? What the max displacement you can get out of one?

There are a few stroked kits here. Either 529 cid or 540 with the standard
