Re:

I use an ENO double nest. Haven't camped in the rain enough to invest in a rainfly yet but it's in my plans. I've just used blue tarps when I had to.

Eno double nest deluxe and a eno sport? Rain fly.

No rain fly for dry summer nights usually. It can be nice to keep the dew off though, or block the bright ass morning sunrise.

Overbag if it's going to be below 20

I use a self inflating air mattress under me when it's chilly outside too. Makes a big difference.

Yeah I have a "kid size" one that goes from my shoulders to my thighs. Really makes a difference in keeping the ol butt and lower back warm when it's below 60 or so at night.

I use a Hennessy Asymmetrical and love it. I am a side sleeper and sleep very comfortably in this style hammock. X2 on the camp pad under you for insulation. Can also use a cheap roll up windshield heat reflector under your sleeping bag with the reflective side facing you. They roll up small and weigh only a couple of ounces if you are backpacking.

Check out the Grand Trunk with Rain Fly & Mosquito net....has reinforced tie straps for extra big boys too. A therma-rest air mattress feels great and keeps the sides from hugging you too death, some of the best sleep of my life in that thing :****: Mosquito net was a must for me

How ironic this thread comes up after this weird weekend ...
I'm not gonna name anyone... But there's a guy on here that needs to chime in on the hammock deal... He should be a pro.. I mean, his is big and strong enough to hold him and a Fukin **** eating dog to get in and make love all night ... (Fawkin weirdest **** Ever)
But he loves Em.. I'm gonna get me one soon.. Just a one man. No room for dog play needed. :****:

Dammit sorry. I had too.

I have an ENO doublenest for winter and a grand trunk that is a single for the summer when it is hot. I camped 3 nights at shamrock and just had a light sleeping bag and the ENO ember 2 under quilt. I have a zero degree down under quilt from hammock gear that was stupid expensive, but man that thing feels like it makes its own heat.

The week before christmas, I camped in Big Bear, California and it was 9 degrees actual with 15-20 mph winds and snow. I literally had the best night of sleep I have ever had in my life.

As others have said, it is just important to get something under you for insulation, even if it is just a foam pad. The ENO under quilt is cheap and I recommend it.

Regarding the tarp, I have an ENO profly, but I wish I had bought the profly XL. They do great at knocking the wind off. They also keep the dew off and block the morning sun as mentioned. I don't always use it. With the down under quilt, it is a must though. Down has a natural odor when wet and the dew is enough to make that under quilt smell funky. I can't handle it, so I always use the tarp with it.

I want to try the asymmetrical hammocks as mentioned, but my problem is that I am already so deep into this thing with the down under quilt that I can't change directions now. I would also really like to check out the warbonnet blackbird. It is a bridge hammock.

As far as setup, I like a very flat hammock so I stretch mine as tight as it will go and then get in it. I try to keep it level as well. Some people say leave your feet high, but I can't handle it. Level or feet down a little is best for me. The big thing is just finding what works for you. Flat works for me.

are there any good instructional videos on how to set up and use these fancy things?

The hammocks that I remember as a kid were great till you went to adjust yourself then they would puke you out like a bad burrito

I've just been winging it but I'm sure you can Google it. They even have hammock camping forums. And these hammocks won't puke you out.

are these things "big guy friendly"?

Yessir. The doubleness is literally a 2 person hammock. I think 2 people in a hammock for anything other than lounging would be terribly uncomfortable, but they will absolutely support the weight.

I've had me "normal size dude" and a plus size chick lounging in mine once upon a time.

Ha plus size chick. Nothing wrong with that, just ask 5bro.

Thanks for all the responses so far. I've seen a few name brands on the inter webs and will more than likely get one to put up around the house and to take along when housing facilities are not prevalent. I see that most use some type of insulation/padding in the winter time. What sleeping bag do you guys use? I have a pretty cold weather bag 0 degrees but nothing for warmer weather.
