As of 6/21/15 there were a couple of different routes to get to HPO. The state has closed one road to repair a bridge on one of the routes... The normal way to get to HPO isn't affected by this, BUT the State Troopers and County Sherriffs are patrolling Hawk Pride Mountain Rd. very heavy. I am trying to get the word out to the people here on the forum not to scare them from HPO but to save some fellow wheelers the agony of a speeding ticket or worse. The speed limit is 40mph and the Troopers are already setting up in various spots with their radars.

They won't have to worry about any speeders going up that dang hill!!! :)

man no kidding there, the only time I speed on that road is when I am giving the cummins all she has in 4th wide open to get a running start.. I love my goose neck, but if you don't get a running start at that one you're gonna be going about 10 at the top

Amen to that bro! Thought the old ford wasn't going make it when we went there. Was not expecting that big of a hill!

The other weekend when I was there I was all stoked because it was my first trip with the Smarty Jr. Then I missed 3rd gear not once but TWICE on the way up. I don't think I've EVER missed a gear and then I do it twice on the same hill!!!! It was 15mph the rest of the way! I was so ticked off I about turned around and tried it again! My wife was inhaling her seat with her anus. She thought we were going to slide back down backwards! LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!

Is there still access from Frankfort Road to New Bethel Road? We usually come in that way. Couple miles longer but the hill is much less steep.

Re:

That is the way that is closed for a few months.

You can go down to hwy 247, turn on old Memphis pike, then smallwood mountain road. It is little longer but a easier pull.

I'll have to try Smallwood Mountain Rd next time. The Chevy didn't like that hill with the Jeep behind it.

Smallwood Mtn Rd is a little easier, there are a couple blind turns...take it slow until you travel it a time or two.
