Had some dope seeping out around the bottom of the 3rd member in my rear axle, went to tighten up some of the nuts around where it was seeping out, and one of the studs broke off. Brock was telling me somebody on here used to sell some sort of stud eliminator kit that includes correct length bolts (grade 8) in order to do away with those puny factory studs. What's the best thing to do here?

Also, are the studs threaded in the axle housing or are they forced/pulled in like in a Ford 9" rear? I've heard both answers.

1) replace the one stud that broke with a factory stud?

2) replace all the studs with new factory studs while I've got it torn apart?

3) try to find some sort of stud eliminator kit like mentioned above?

I think I've still got a set or 2 of the button head bolt kits.

You screw the bolts in from the inside of the housing to act as studs,

Yeah, I've got a couple of those kits left, I bought a bulk box of those bolts/nuts/washers.

$15 shipped.
This is a great fix and a great price. It's robbery what some of these Toyota vendors charge for the same thing TBItoy is selling :wtflol:

No ****, especially since I just went and bought a couple boxes of hardware, then counted out 10 of each bolt/nut/washer and put it in an envelope (for one kit). Basically I needed about 5 "kits" for myself and have been selling the rest off.

It really makes it a lot easier to install the bolts if you can get your hands on a tap (or make "thread cleaning bolt") a to clean the threads. I just put the tap in a drill and run it through all the holes, otherwise it sucks trying to thread those damn bolts in from the inside with dirty threads.

I also take a small cutoff wheel and trim the bottom bolts back after i get the diff installed, otherwise the threads will get boogered up.

Never had a problem with the diff coming loose after doing this mod tho.

TBITOY the other Toyota guru:****:
I have to install one of the kits I got from him in the other axle..

Nick, I'll take one of those kits. pm me paypal info and I'll shoot you the money! Thanks a lot!!!! I'm just gonna let it drip til after Hollytree next weekend then I'll tear it down and replace all of it, so I ain't in any hurry on the shipping.

And I believe the studs that are in the rearend now have been cut off about 1/4 inch or less above the nut, so yes I'll definitely do that after installing the new ones.

Had to post another poser shot.......

That's all that truck does! Only reason he is worried about broke stud is because he don't want it dropping on his pretty concrete floor and on his trailer. :****:

I beginning to wonder bout this guy, does he have a rig to wheel? Or just have a rig to talk to us about? :spin:
