HELP! Broke 3rd member stud in Toyota rear axle

was it one of the bottom studs? you must have dropped off the articulation ramp or a parking lot curb and caught it on the edge and sheared it :flipoff1: or maybe the previous owner broke it a long time ago...

i've never broken a stud but the bottom four were always getting the threads and nuts boogered up from scraping, hitting rocks, i started threading in cap head bolts from the outside on those lower 4. it sure is a lot easier to change a broken one or F'd up one from the outside than having to take your axle all to peices to fix it.

Yea it was the very bottom driver's side one. It started by noticing the bottom side of the chunk was oily and noticed a drop or two on the floor. The stud that I broke, was in the center of the already oily spot where it was leaking at. I tightened the one beside it first, no problem…then got the socket on the one in the center of where it was leaking, and "POP!" it just seemed to snap, but did not even get to half the output pressure I put on the previous nut beside it before it snapped. So maybe it was already broke but was just seized up in there from riding and I freed it when I put the socket on it? Idk, I'm gonna change all of them using the bolts I get from Nick this time and if it happens again, I will try an alternate route like you have mentioned.

If this is for a Fj80 rear then it uses bigger studs than mini-truck diffs

Nevermind, looks like a mini rear in your poser pic there

And the first time I noticed it leaking was after the bounty hill climb ride at Chocc a few weeks ago. And me and Chad did the Hell's Revenge trail and Carnage Canyon several times so it may have took a good lick on a rock that day.

And no, mini truck rear as far as I know. Only fj80 front.

JD you going to the ride for Randys family next weekend at hpo?

Wish I could, never been there before. I guess this rainy Mash Yer Motor Bash this coming weekend will be my last ride for a few weekends. I've gotta go to a friend's wedding next Saturday down around Gadsden. After this weekend's ride I'll be busy between fixing the rearend and a knuckle/axle seal rebuild on the front end in spare time when I get some, then working around schedules to make time for my electrician buddy to come over and help me wire up my shop and hang lights finally. I'll be out of the wheeling game for a bit after this weekend.

Just my opinion, but if you only have one broke stud and the rest is tight, i would leave it alone till you had to fix something else! kinda alot of work for nothing there buddy

It is alot of work for something so minor but it's leaking and it's kind of annoying getting all over my purdy shop floor and my trailer when I haul it somewhere ;D. If it were one of the studs higher up on the housing it would be different, but its the very bottom one on the driver's side. Plus it'll give me a chance to tear it apart and familiarize myself with all that **** since I'm a newb :flipoff1:

Dug into the rear axle and swapped out the studs tonight with the button head allen bolts I got from Nick. Got everything put back together and all I gotta do now is fill her back up with gear oil and cut off the excess of the bottom bolts, bleed the brakes and she's ready to roll leak free! Got some troubleshooting to do on the passenger rear brake, when I undone the brake line from that side's drum brake, no brake fluid came out and the shoes didn't look like they had been rubbing the drum at all. The driver's side drum brake looked normal and fluid came out of it. Anyway, pretty simple job for a mechanic newb. Glad to get it done. And I'm DEFINITELY glad I bought a tap and cleaned out the threaded housing holes, it would've been a BITCH putting the new bolts in if I hadn't have used the tap.

:dblthumb:

And also got the new quick release fire extinguisher mount Jamie made me bolted down in the bed. thumb.gif

I've also discovered that there are some small Pioneer speakers in the factory dash too which is an awesome find! So next thing will be finding the wires for them and running them into the 4 channel amp that currently runs the 2 6x9 marine speakers I put in. Hooray for more audio!!! :woot:
