hydro assist, which ram?

A ram of that style will have slightly less pressure pulling than it will pushing. This is because of there being less surface area to push on when the cylinder is traveling in. In the picture above you can see that on the pull side you have a shaft in there. This shaft takes some displacement away from the available area for hydraulic pressure to push on. Creating less force pulling than pushing. It's really close to not noticeable though. When my rig is sitting on flat ground I can feel the difference if I'm paying attention. When out wheeling I don't notice.

A double acting hydro cyl. pushes both ways. If everything is fuctioning correctly there should be equal amount of pressure left to right.
A better explaintion from Pirate 4x4
Double acting - Most piston-type actuating cylinders are double-acting, which means that fluid under pressure can be applied to either side of the piston to apply force and provide movement. The two fluid ports, one near each end of the cylinder, alternate as inlet and outlet ports, depending on the direction of flow from the steering unit.

ah, ok cool. that pretty much verifies what i was thinking.
i thought maybe it worked both ways, and depending on direction..the inlet/outlets would change.

ok, 1 more queston guys. the ram takes 3/8(#6) fittings. but, what size line do i need to use. a 1/4 line with a 3/8 end?
whats best for the 1.5x6 ram? im ASSuming the 3/8 since thats the fittings it takes.

so 3/8 or 1/4 hose for that 1st ram i linked?

You can get fittings in 1/4" to #6 but that's too small IMO. I have a buddy running just that oon his assist and it doesn't seem to make a huge difference but why choke the system down when the pump outlet is 10mm?

thats what i was wondering. i didnt want it to flow TOO much either.
so 3/8(#6) is the way to go then.

now..to get funds for this project....
