I need y'alls advice on a new motor...

He placed 3rd in advanced class this weekend and judging by the grin on his face when he was running I'm guessing he loves it. :) I was paying a lot of attention to his cooling system as he basically has an iron block version of my motor and was amazed to see how well his budget setup worked. He was one of the few competitors NOT to overheat all day and he says it didn't even get close. There were guys there with $1000 radiators that were blowing steam half the race! I forgot how hot he said it got but it wasn't even close to overheating. It definately has me reevaluating how much I want to spend on my cooling system.

Adam, after your recommendation to me a while back via PM on Pirate do you have any idea why Andrew's cooling system worked so well? He's got about $200 into his system and based on your advice I was about to drop over $1000 into mine??? I feel like I am missing something here ... maybe you can help em figure out what it is ...

JJ, Talk to Jimmy about the setup he uses on the rigs he builds. He uses a low buck setup and swears by it
 
The motor is sick nasty, so sick nasty in fact that it took me a week to realize that there is something wrong with my DBW and the throttle body isn't opening past 1/4 throttle...ever. I realized this issue Friday after Mast was closed so we couldn't diagnose the issue. It really didn't hurt me that bad, the motor would still rev up, we were running around 4-5k pretty much the whole race and hit 6k for an extended period on the back stretch. It just wasn't as instant as I would have liked. I'm probably going to kill myself once the problem is fixed I swear it's got just tons of power on tap.

JJ, we placed 2nd by 18 seconds :****: And you're right dude, it was worth every dime I spent on it. Adam did a phenomenal job on the install. The motor ran 205 all day, it creeped just barely past 210 for a few minutes when we were running 6k for extended periods on those back county roads but as soon as we got to your checkpoint and turned the corner we were back down to 205 pegged and that was probably running a solid 4 to 5k RPM the whole rest of the time. We ran 2.7 low on the klune the entire race. The cooling system is really simple. Big aluminum radiator, lots of capacity and a Taurus fan. That's it.

2nd? I thought Witch Dr. was 2nd and you were behind him by 18 seconds. So that means Witch got 1st? Man my memory sucks balls.

glad you are happy with your choice.....looking forward to seeing some vids.

as far as cooling goes, I have about $250-300 in my my setup. Howe dual pass aluminum radiator with a taurus fan on it. Ran hard at the SETTC for 4-5mins straight in single low, ran for quite a long period of time at Harlan going up to Mason Jar in single low (most of the time) never got over 210, it usually runs around 190-200. if it does go up past 210, then it only takes a few seconds to cool it back down to 190.

Nazir (witch dr) got 3rd. Fred got 1st. John G posted the excel spreadsheet in the race thread. I downloaded it and you can sort the columns so see all the times for the different classes. Pretty neat.
 
So you passed Nazir at some point? I thought he started and ended before you???

Here is the deal.
First off Andrews engine was only running around 1/4 throttle all day in the race. Any thing will stay cool running at at 1/4 throttle. He even said the temp started to creep once on a straight away. I Hope when it is running at 100% the buggy cools for him but I can't guarantee it to him.

That being said I will ONLY put some thing in a buggy that I know will work. I am in a different light than a lot of people that you can get advice from. When I turn out a full turn key buggy it is up to me to design the buggy and make all of the parts work together with each other. So I hooked up with a reputable company that could help me make educated guesses with cooling. I build buggies with tight clearances like most others. So, when I take the time to put a radiator in, build around it, and powder coat the chassis I am going to make sure that it cools like it should. If I turn out some thing that runs hot it is up to me to make it not. Then I have to grind off some ones new powder coat and try to put in a different radiator and all of the head ache that goes with it. I like the piece of mind that comes with doing the job right. I did not say this is the only way I just said it is the only way I have found to guarantee that I won't have to go back and redo work that will make the customer mad because I had to cut up their new buggy and it makes me look bad when stuff like that happens.

So I have been around vehicle with cheap set ups that won't run hot ,but with as much as I have ridding on a build I want to run what I know will work. Its up to you weather or not you will take a chance with your cooling system. You know one will work and you hope the other way will. Its the choice of the builder to use what he wants to.

Also as you saw this weekend I would be leery of any one giving me cooling advice unless they have ran endurance races before. They are torture on a cooling system.

I understand your POV and can't say that I disagree. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to put you on the spot. Your advice to me was sound and good and I really appreciate it. Right now I am going to give a slightly cheaper radiator and fan combo a try that I know people have had success with. If it doesn't work for me I will go all out and go with what you recommended and not putz around anymore. I won't powdercoat a rig simply because I always end up modifying it over time so that is not a huge concern for me. Thanks again.

Update: Holy **** motor is fixed. It was the ECM. Took literally 2 minutes maybe less to fix. Unplugged my ECM, plugged in a new one and the bitch revved to the moon. I got three words to describe the throttle response now...oh my ****

I also wanted to mention, Woodlee knocked this motherfucker out of the park from the point of me dropping the rig off to having it done when he said it would be done (couple weeks early actually thanks to me begging) and everything looks like it was designed with the chassis from the ground up. To say I was floored when I saw the finished product was an understatement. And, when there was a problem he not only sent me a new ECM which was what we thought it was, he sent me a new DBW pedal just in case the ECM didn't work I could still ride this weekend instead of waiting on parts. Best money I ever spent on the buggy :****:

This motor has so much power it's fuggin rediculous. I'm almost positive Woodlee sabatoged my ECM so it would be like training wheels. He was probably worried I'd drive myself into oblivion :****: Now that the governor is off there's no tellin what will happen :woot:
 
Make sure to let me know how it cools at more than 1/4 throttle. :)

Nope, nothing at all. It fits so well it looks like he built the chassis for the motor. He did build some trick brackets for my accumulator and PS and trans cooler which integrated nicely with the whole install. Top notch stuff
